Thinking about a career change.......

Well I'm getting sick of the roller coaster ride that is car sales.

I have been in the automotive industry since I was old enough to see over a steering wheel. I have done a bunch of different jobs here and I just burned out with dealership life.

I hate to leave the family business, but it's not the greatest place to have social life. 6 days a week 60hrs a week tends to get in the way.

My X worked in the medical supply industry. She loved it. She made great money and had great benfits. She sold wound care products.

I've had a few recruiters call me about this field. I don't have a college degree, but they said my sale experience would play a huge factor.

Anyone in that field? Input? :dontknow:

Matt,
Half of my wife's family is in pharmacutical sales and my wife is a pharmacist. It's a great field if you can sell stuff. If anyone wants to know why drugs are so expensive, look at a drug rep's expense account. My sister in law goes to conferences around the country, brings lunches and dinners to doctors, and has a free car with a gas card. I'm not sure whether having a degree is a requirement or not.

Yeah if she made plan they had trips all over ther world.

I'm just interested in making more money and having the time to enjoy my life. This state sucks for anything auto related. Plus I will have the chance to transfer to other states if I choose too.

I have a friend that manages pharm reps. He makes a good living as do his reps.

The down side is you're going to have to travel. Plus you'll have to deal with nurses.

:lo:

I have a few friends and a cousin that are in the drug sales biz.

They work very little and make a healthy salary. My cousin makes a bit more becasue she is a very attractive female, but my buddy does pretty well (in this area) and is a dude...

If you want, I can see what type of qualifications are required and if they're hiring these days.

But I'm talking about drugs, not supplies. I'm not sure if there is a difference in qualifications.

thought any medical sales required a degree? Am i wrong on that? Don't know if Matt has a bachelors degree.

How is that the down side? Why are people in Michigan so against seeing anything else out there?

I travel all over the world for work and love it...occasionally it gets to be a bit much (have you been to Korea in the winter?) but in general, seeing the world on someone else's dime is pretty cool.

If you had kids it might be different, but my understanding is that you do not.

He's talking about free time, living out of a suitcase or a car does not equal free time IMO.

I've traveled for work and it was fun for about 2 years. Plus post 911 air travel blows goats.

nooo, wait.. you gotta at least stay until i lease my next truck..

hah, good luck in what you decide..

I'll sell part time to family and friends. I wouldn't walk away completely unless I moved out of state. Even if I did I'd have one of my buddies take care of my customers.

Not in all cases. No I do not have a bachelors degree.

I'd travel. I wouldn't want to be out of town 5 days a week, but I wouldn't mind being gone sometimes.

No. No kids that I know of

I think if you want the big bucks in the actual drug sales biz you have to have a degree. A friend of mines mom was in that line of work and she had a medical degree. He's in med school now with the mind to do the same thing (I wouldn't care how much it paid when I got out, I couldn't stand being 27, still in school, and owing 160k to other people, ugh). I don't see why you'd need one to sell equipment and supplies.

Sorry to hear Trunk - I know how you feel.... I always think about getting out of Automotive, but I work at a great place and for the time being I am sort of "Peeked Out" here where I work. I am on call 24/7 and put about 45 to 55 hours a week (which I like) but the on call is what wears on me. Money is good, but a change would be nice! I am to much of a wuss to look and consider a jump. I have a wife and child and one on the way though!!!

I bet you are pulling some coin there, No? Why couldnt you talk to your Uncle and explain your situation. Maybe he could work out a deal for you to make it more appealing to you? Like less hours same pay or maybe more commission per vehicle so you wont have to make as many sales??? I dont know.....:dontknow:

Yeah I've always thought I would be slapping my family in the face if I left, but it's about my me being happy.

I just can't stand the 9-9 Mon & Thurs and every other Saturday. Then I end up coming in on my Saturday off because I feel guilty or that I'm missing a sale.

I can't got to my Uncle and ask for something like that. I'm not that way. I don't expect special treatment. I like being on a level playing field. I hate the "Boss's Kid" thing.

Why don't you work on getting a degree? Go to University of Phoenix or something. Seriously. You should at least check it out.

My opinion.

Work for yourself Matt. Seriously.....I know you're a good salesmen, and that's the biggest part of doing it IMO. What would you do......who knows? But seriously give it some thought...there are tons of things to do to make money in the business world, and if you're a good salesmen, you can do almost any of them.

You're single with no dependants, and that is a GREAT place to be to get something started. Don't wait until you have a wife, kids, and a lot of bills to try it. Trust me, that's a lot more stressful :)
