The Pacific on HBO

The show looked good, but did you hear what Tom Hanks said about the war? I heard him go on about how it was a racist war and stuff...let me try to find the quote

EDIT:

Appearing on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” on March 5, Hanks had said that “The Pacific” depicts a war of “racism and terror” and asked the interviewer if that sounded "familiar to what we might be going through today."

there was definately alot of hatred and distrust of asians due to the war and most of that was born of the attack on pearl harbor. It is true and one only has to look at the prowar propoganda of the day to see it.

But thats how wars are. You hate your enemy. Thats just the way it has always been.

x2 wars always generate racism.

I thought the first one was good. I'm a huge BoB fan and actually went and ordered HBO on Fri just to be able to watch The Pacific. Can't wait for next week!

I liked it alot, been waiting 4 years for this (the internet hype) Im a little dissappointed they didnt do the "training and back story episode" like BOB, But they seem to be putting the emotional side of the marines into the story line. If you have comcast under ondemand they have a few 8 minute previews of episodes

Watched most of the first one, was pretty good. They had a special screening for us at work like two weeks ago but I didn't go to it. It is DVR worthy.

agreed.
Its hard to kill when you think its another human. War is nasty ask our current returning veterans. You have to look at it this way, think of your best friend. Think of your best friend being killed by someone who 1. doesent look anything like you 2. Screams in a forigen language you dont understand. 3. smells strange with the scent of exotic foods.

What naturally happens is you de-humanize your enemy. Its a survival mechanisim to keep your mind intact. (even though you will still have nightmares of it.) there is a very good book by Nate Self that explains it better. The book it called "two wars" its about his time as an army Ranger officer in afganastan (first war) and then the war with himself after he returned. when he spoke to us last week here at the plant he said something that still bothers me.

"every night I kill people in my sleep."

bone chilling if you ask me.

Forgot it started last night. I'm recording it at 1 am for later watching pleasure

Man I just can't get into this like B of B. It's just not as good. Maybe because the European front was taught so much in history classes and shown so much on TV that I related better. I'm a HUGE WWII buff, but this isn't done as well as B of B. It's missing something, but I can't figure out what. Oh well I'll still watch

I consider myself a WWII buff as well. I think Band of Brothers was more of a historical fact-type of film series. It talked about the relationships of the 101st airborne members in relation to the historical events they were involved in. It is one of my all-time favorites to watch.

IMO The Pacific focuses more on the human and psychological impact of fighting an enemy in absolute hell-holes. The rain on some of those islands would have driven me crazy, let along the bonzai attacks. The Japanese just threw bodies at our troops. Guadalcanal, Iwo, Okinawa, all of the islands we fought on were won yard-by-yard in horrendous physical conditions.

I didn't think anything could compare to the intensity of the December 1944 time frame in the Ardennes during the Battle of the Bulge. (The Russians suffered terribly at Stalingrad as well). Iwo and Okinawa were battles of attrition. Thousands of US deaths but multiples more Japanese died, fighting until the bitter end (sometimes needlessly dying when they could have surrendered, were they allowed to).

All in all, the sacrifices our soldiers made in WWII are incomprehensible to me. I think that is why I am so intrigued by it and watch and read as much as I can on the subject.

^ Yeah, the Pacific seems to focus more on the men itself and not so much the actual battle/fog of war (although there is some emphasis on the latter).

I get that same impression. Much more focused on the human aspect (particularly between battles or right after a big fight) rather than the actual battles.

Part 4 was kind of a buzzkill. I don't care what sitting in the rain for weeks does in their heads, I want to see bullets dammit!

wait for the later episodes, remember BofB started sloy and ended slow from what Ive been reading the end of the war is much more action filled
