Talked to me about boosted 5.0s

I'm certain it won't happen this year... but maybe over the winter. Doing some research and people are talking all over the map about what's a safe amount of boost/power on a stock longblock. I've heard 6lbs and 300hp all the way to guys saying 500hp is safe on the stock longblock.

Turbo? Supercharger? Just BS'ing around here.

its 100% in the tune. ive seen a shitty tune destroy a 300hp motor and ive also seen a good tune take a stock block to 600. and girdles are just a bandaid...

Well at 500RWHP they say its a ticking time bomb. My car personally has a stock shortblock with H/C/I and a bolt on turbo kit and made 522/488 and have been running it that way for almost 2 years without a hiccup, but then again I've made >10 passes and it mainly only sees the street on nice weekend days. Can in blow up at any time...yes....or so its been said. With a good tune you can make 400-500 and be fine IMO. With a Supercharger I would definately try to keep it below 450 just because of the added stress that creates on the crank. 500 with a turbo no problem. Im sure other people will say no fucking way dont make any more then 400 cause you're asking for trouble but I;ve done it and seen it done on many other cars.

I'd say if you want to make cheap reliable horsepower and maintain awesome driveability keep the long block stock, add a set of headstuds and some good gaskets. Then a decent intake/throttle body combo and slap on a turbo system. On3 performance makes a nice affordable system that has been proven time and time again for $1500....yeah $1500. Add fuel system upgrades and you have a fun as hell street car for under 2k that could rip out a low 11 high 10 second time if you so chose to race it at the track. Just my .02

LS swaps and terminator swaps are all to common to invest in a time bomb 90's engine.

Its even crazy how the new 5.0 makes double what a fox made.

All this also means I have no experience with the 302. :) I always heard 500rwhp was where the block split.

All true. It's in teh tune. At 450HP plus if you rattle the pistons you can call it a day. I had a stock shortblock with HCI and 175 NOS. It ran 10.3X in a 3000lb car. It ran that level for about 6 years. Car still runs to this day with the new owner. My tune was always safe, and never detonated.

So do it, and be aware of what you're doing. Don't push it to a "max" level, just be happy with what it makes with a safe tune. ANd short blocks are a dime a dozen.

As stated, it comes down to the tune. You can have mild builds that kill ya, and wild builds that last forever.

Tune was good, crank just said "I'm done"

stick a stock 5.3l ls motor in there with a turbo and call it a day, not so much of a time bomb either ;) and the tune ability is much better

My buddy has a vortech fox body that made 520rwhp and it ran perfect for 2.5 years, but eventualy the block split down the middle.

This sounds like exactly what I want. I'd love to just push a safe 425-450hp with a turbo and call it a day. I've never been one to chase that extra 1/10th in the 1/4 mile... I'd love a low-mid 11 second, reliable car.
