T-5 problems

My buddies 87LX 5.0 he bought not long ago is giving him some tranny problems. When he puts it in reverse it jams and wont go into reverse and when you are on the e-way and go to put it into 5th nothing happens it just free revs. He is not sure what the deal is. So what do you guys think? Do you think the trans. is goin out and he should buy a new one or have this one rebuilt? I do know that had a new clutch put in recently and now this happened, coincidence?
 
I know I can't explain it right but 5th gear and reverse run on the counter shaft. It's possible the lever that's connects the two came loose. T-5's aren't really hard to rebuild but in this case you just need to take the cover plate off and look inside for anything disconnected.

Hey thanks. He is going to take a look at it this weekend. I will let you know what happens.
