Starter doesn't always disengage after starting...... Four Winns Boat

Does anyone have any ideas what could be causing this to happen? It doesn't happen all the time. It will be fine for a couple of weeks, then it happened 3 out of the last four times I started it. I can turn off and remove the key, but the engine keeps running and the starter stays engaged. I can shut it down by pulling the negative cable from the battery. I replaced the starter last year (not fun at all). I replaced the solenoid (secondary?) near the top of the engine. I am also able to jump the two gold (pic below) with set of pliers and it starts every time and the starter always dis-engages.

We use a lot of those solenoids on f700'S. Almost always a bad ground. Plus if you have replaced it make sure the one you have is quality. Some poor quality ones can not be mounted any other way but vertical.

Thanks, I will double check the grounds tonight. I thought I mounted it the same as when I took it off, with the gold posts horizontal and the silver post on the bottom. When you say vertical, do you mean the two gold being vertical?

Also, anyone know if there is a way to remove one of those pictures? I tried the manage images under edit, but it is just a black screen?

I can not see the pictures (tapatalk?), or know the application, but that sounds like bad solenoid tips welding/sticking allowing current to continue to flow to the motor. After you return the negative to the battery does the starter continue running? Do you smell anything burning? Are the solenoid(s) getting warm? Next time it does it, if they are accessible try tapping them with something to break them free. What condition is your battey in? A weak battery can cause the tips to wear faster than normal. Also any loose or bad connections from the battery to the solenoid? It could also be a weak spring that holds the solenoid normally open.

I went to web view and seen the picture. Im assuming the coil to the solenoid is grounded by the case? Make sure the mounting hardware and surface is tight and clean. After you start it normally and it does not disengage, pull the negative and grab a multimeter if you have one. Remove the cables from the two posts and check for continuity (bad tips/contacts). If there is none, keep the cables unhooked, reinstall negative cable at battery and check for 12 at your signal wire (bad ignition/short).

That is kind of what we thought, current continuing to flow for some reason. We wondered about a diode that could be bad, but didn't find one. When I pull the negative cable from the battery, everything shuts off. Also, when it happens, I am able to turn the key off and remove it, but the engine and starter continue to run. I am not sure about the solenoid being warm (can check), but I turn it off asap so to not damage the starter. The battery is new this spring. I may try to buy a new solenoid.

whats the key(switch look like) What year? at one point alot of the switches recalled to put a rubber boot over them

88. There is a rubber boot on the panel where the key goes into the switch. I replaced the switch with a generic one from Advance, but no change, so I returned it.
