St Helen's ATV Trip

This past weekend (SUNDAY) 2 friends and I went to St. Helens for some riding on Sunday. Left early morning, made a few stops on the way up there, but was on the trails by 10am.
I rode a KFX 700, a friend brought his KFX 700, and another brought a 4x4 Prairie 700 (all machines had the same engine and were automatics). The Prairie was the fastest as it had a big bore kit from V Force John and extensive engine work.

St Helens trails are great. It is sandy, but the morning rain on the way up kept the dust down. The trails are WIDE (not like Layota which are very narrow) and there were very few sections of whoops. In many areas we were WOT on the trails. There was the ocassional puddle of water due to the morning rain, but you could skip across it at 65mph.

We rode from the trail head in St. Helens to Prudenville and back. (well i was towed the last 2 miles as i ran out of fuel just before Prudenville. I removed some mods to make the machine more reliable and never changed the jets. The carbs were pissing fuel into the engine causing me to use a ridiculous amount of fuel.). Drove right through town next to Houghton Lake, pulled up the gas station, filled up, grabbed some food, and drove through town. The local police officer even waived to us as we drove by.

Afterwards, headed back to St Helens and I had to refuel again. At this time my quad was losing power and bogging at anything more than 1/2 throttle. So we let the machines cool down as we grabbed some food in downtown St. Helens. just lined the ATV's up with the other ones, kinda like motorcycles lined up outside a bar.

Afterwards, the quad was still acting up. Rode back to the truck and swapped the plugs out. I never saw plugs so black and fouled in my life. Pulled the outerwear off the filter to get more air and she was back to running great, albeit pig rich.
We rode to the "ROCKS" where the prairie was put through the paces climbing over rocks and boulders. Using the winch occasionally to make it over.

Then we headed over to the open area. It is a large sandy area with a huge fire pit, and sand hills to climb. I'd say it is about a 1/4 mile square area. Raced a few other quads up the sand hills, had a great time. We packed up the car around 5pm and headed home.

We rode 78.3 miles!

Thoughts:
The riding is great! Nice wide trails, clearly marked. You can ride through town legally.
The suspension on the 700 needs to be softened up a lot. While all the quads were automatics, it was nice not having to shift and still go ~65-70mph.
The Banshees (we all have them) would have been a much much smoother ride, but my left hand would have been killing from pulling in the clutch. Plus 100hp is a little too much for the trails.

I strongly recommend it, if you are looking for a nice place to ride. It's close enough to do a day trip.
The St. Helen trails met up with other trails and you can ride as long as you want. Next to Silver Lake, it's my favorite place to ride in Michigan.

i got a place there in st helen, it can get really dusty at times, but like you said trails are good. and the scramble area is cool to hang out at night with a big ass fire

By far one of the best places to ride. I went up for memorial day weekend... but unfortunatly couldnt ride them due to that fugitive being loose, which really sucked. Ive been planning a weekend trip with a few friends to go up soon, maybe you and your buddies would want to come, were always looking for more people to join. We camp right off the power lines off of roscommon rd. My girlfriends mom has a place down the road so we still have all the ammenties if need be. What bar did you go to?

My dad and i own a place down the road from the mobil gas station its a cool town and trails are great.

yeah im glad i didnt make that trip. sounded like a total clusterfuck! but ill be ready for the next one! provided i finally dig the bike out of the garage! lol

Oh crap...I've never been to St. Helens??? Thanks for the tip. Been going to Mio/Rose City/Bull Gap for decades and just got so use to that system. I believe it's a 200 mile trail system too.

If anyone has been to both place how would you compare the 2? Going up in a few weeks.

My Stepfathers parents use to have a place on Lake St. Helen. It was always a good time, been on the trails but it's be a few years.

Good info here, Were are planning a week long trip next month and this will be one of the stops. Leaving for Silver Lake in about 7 hours!

We rode from the trail head in St. Helens to Prudenville and back. (well i was towed the last 2 miles as i ran out of fuel just before Prudenville. Glad you had fun. Just to note for people thinking about going though, be aware that all state & federal roads are still illegal to ride on. It's only the county roads that are open, and only for some counties. So, no M-18 or M-55 in that Prudenville area or you'll get a ticket (the Denton Creek trailhead is right off of M-18). Not sure how you got to a gas station w/o going on M-55 at that M-18 intersection there with the BK... but sounds like you a got a little lucky the officer was in a good mood. Also, you must have a lit headlight & taillight on the ORV in order to be on the road.... even during the day. That's normally not a big deal for utility quad, but may pose an issue for some sport quads and dirt bikes.

Essentially the same riding. Bull Gap will be more whooped out than St. Helens, esp on the north side of BG. Mio area trails are about on par with St. Helens... except for the open scramble area St. Helens has. Sounds like he rode mostly DNR Routes (a/k/a roads) given his description and speed... not the DNR Trails that parallel most of routes. The Mio & Rose City trails will be tighter than the routes he's referring to, which get you over to the Denton Creek route and then up to M-18 & the Denton Creek TH & Prudenville area.

Honestly, most of the L.P. trails are exactly the same. Flat, dusty, sandy, dry, whooped out mess. The only ones I've found that are good/different are Atlanta, Kalkaska & Lincoln Hills/Little Manistee. Leota is kinda nice to do in October when the leaves are changing colors, with the river & all.

Ridden there many times with both the Wrangler and the ATVs. Definitely a nice setup.

Which is one of the reasons we seldom ride St. Helens anymore. We had a couple close calls with full-sized 4x4s either T-boning us, or just being assholes on the routes.

That sucks. When I'm in the Jeep I'm on a different set of trails. I would -not- take the Jeep on the same trails that the 4 wheelers and dirt bikes use. That be be dangerous and frankly not any fun.

We knew we were likely going to get tickets, but I was out of gas, so the 4x4 was towing me down M-18??? whatever it is that goes through Prudenville. once we got into town, there were no sidewalks, so we rode right down the middle of the street. we were damn lucky.

Yea, I know that area well since a good friend has a cottage on the lake. M-55 is the 4 lane road (2 each way) that follows the southern perimeter of the lake. M-18 would have been the 2 lane road from the TH into town - you'd basically run right into a BK and then Houghton Lake if u kept straight on M-18 past that M-55 T intersection. Probably was an out-of-business grocery store on your right... and you probably went to the right to the closest gas station. BP would have been closest to left, but it's down there a bit.

Well I figured out WHY I ran out of gas (almost twice).

The main jetting should have been 135 (stock sized). It had 188!!!
According to my calculations, this is 24 jet sizes larger than what it should have been running.
Basically the carbs were pissing gasoline into the engine.

Runs great now and I think I improved the top end by at least 5mph

That will definitly do it, 210 main in mine, + a honda HRC needle. 2 days at Silver Lake = 10 gallons of fuel. FML lol

try a 2 stroke (twice as much fuel) 2 cylinder (twice as much fuel).

I'll be there this weekend, leaving Friday.

I can imagine, I just know last time I was there I rode all weekend on about 4 gallons with the stock motor lol. I think we may be heading back in July for the long travel roundup. Getting quad ready for our trail ride trip right now in 2 weeks.
