Spark Testers

My car won't start and I'm trying to figure out if its a fuel or spark issue. Can I use a standard spark tester on it or is the cars electrical system too much for that little flashlight bulb?

you can use one of those testers, thats what they're made for, the old screw driver in the plug wire trick works too
