So, Volkswagen is dead huh?

In case you missed it... Cliff notes version is that VW has been caught using a "defeat device" that caused the 2.0 TD models to run in a cleaner emissions mode when under testing... but otherwise polluting at a significantly higher amount in normal conditions. Thus far, they have pinned it on 2005-present 2.0 TD engines but may include more. VW has ordered dealers to stop selling all current 2.0 models and the EPA is likely going to hit them with massive fines, recalls or possible buybacks for all of the ones already on the road. This may end up being the end of VW in the U.S.

wonder who ratted them out? And what process was executed to 'spill' this to the general public/media...

The cars in question meet emissions standards tests in a laboratory or testing station, but in normal operation they emit nitrogen oxides at up to 40 times the standard, according to the EPA.

:jawdrop:

I wonder if anyone else has been using this type of device. Both for emissions and fuel consumption.

I have a dead 06 2.0 TDI in my garage with a worn cam and a broken timing belt, maybe this could be good for me?

Everyone runs for the hills. I am thinking dam I could get a great deal on a new VW tdi :).

By looking at the VW stock, at least 30% off!
(VW has pulled all there TDI's from sales).

Here is a question : If you have a newer diesel VW under warranty & take
it to the dealer for repair work - what are they going to do?

They are pretty good at updating cals and stuff like that, even if you don't request it.
For this situation, the cure will be a updated cal with EGR functioning, which will also result is lower FE.
Usually people who purchase TDI's are in it for the FE, so they will notice this, and probably not be very happy about it.

Check TSB's, that is a known issue I have heard of before.
This won't have anything to do with your issue, but the TSB may help you.

That's actually a brilliant idea... have to give them credit for thinking about it.
VW is not going anywhere..... one of the strongist if not the strongest auto companies in the world.

I thought I saw 06+ somewhere but I went back and looked and I see only 09+ as well.

I'm still pretty pissed about the faulty cam bearing design on the BRM TDI's. There's no fix for it because it's a faulty cylinder head design. All of these motors will eventually die for the same reason.

Everything I have read today says model years 09-15 are involved.

Only a small portion of VAG is even publicly owned. The Porsche family owns a majority, the state of Lower Saxony owns 20 percents and the sovereign wealth fund of Qatar owns 17 percent.

That said, deceiving the test in the way that they did is unconscionable and they're going to get a serious slap on the peepee.

NY Times said:
The software measured factors such as the position of the steering wheel, the vehicle’s speed and even barometric pressure to sense when the car was being subjected to testing, the E.P.A. said. The car then configured itself to reduce emissions of nitrogen oxide, a gas that is a major contributor to smog and is linked to an array of respiratory ailments including asthma, emphysema and bronchitis, the E.P.A. said on Friday.
