Until I got to my mechanics shop to show him what I got, and he took it for a spin, and then told me I had to park it. The whining sound that I thought was from a lower quality gear, is apparently some jacked up bearings back there. The place he referred me to is claiming a minimum of 450 to fix the bearings, plus the chance of more, if anything else is jacked. Sound realistic? I really don't know much about this sort of thing, so I appreciate your comments. Without you guys, I'd be buying swamp land in florida because it would make my car faster...

450 sounds very high to change bearings. A complete rear end kit with all new parts is about $100. I think most places charge about $250 for a gear change. Honestly I would get yourself a used 3.73 or 4.10 gear and have them do a gear swap when you replace the bearings.
Driveline solutions will hook you up and they aren't that far from Warren.

It supposedly has a 3.73 now, but Ive heard 4.10 is better for automatics, so ive been debating just having them swap it out. I would drive it over to driveline, but i was told i could damage more stuff driving the car how it is

So far the bill is up to almost 700. WTB my own tow truck so I could just get my car out of there. Shits gettin ridiculous. Wish I would have taken it to driveline solutions :'( Oh, and its got a 2.73 gear. Love when people bullshit when they sell you a car

Go with 4.30's if it's an AOD car. You'll love them!

ended up just having the bearings done, 450 was the bill. he was telling me the posi clutches are going out on it. both wheels still spin, but would recommend doing it. Going to wait until i take it somewhere ELSE to get a better gear put in, and have those done at the time. Any clue what I should expect to pay to get a 4.10 or 4.30 or w/e put in, and those clutches replaced?

300 to replace clutches while the diff's already out!?!? holly eff! if you brought the diff to me i'd replace the clutches for taco bell. it's like a 15 minute job if you take your time and clean the shit out of everything and follow the book the whole time. and it's only 115 for the GOOD clutches.

i'd recommend finding someone to put the gears in that's not a business. for instance i'm putting gears in my buddies car this weekend, using the proper ford tools from my work and all that good stuff, and his payment for my labor is taco bell and 2 bottle fill ups, so about 65 bucks ;).

If you weren't in Saginaw, Id be there right now. Also, is it risky buying a slightly used ring and pinion? Also, what brand to buy, and probably the better debate, what ratio? Practically stock, AOD. Its gonna get some goodies probably over the winter, but for now I'd like to wake it up a bit.

I would probably go 3.73 if its driven on the street alot, and stick to Ford gears. They fit nicer. 300 to replace clutches on a diff that is already out is robbery.

yeah i'm sure that's a little bit of a drive. like superstang said, the ford racing ones are the best ones, they're more forgiving and good price wise. it's hit and miss with used gears, i have used 4.10's in my car and they're pretty good, a little howl over 55. and then my buddy got used 4.10's in his fox, and it has a very loud howl to it, replaced all the bearings in his and same thing, jsut the gears. for an aod i'd do 4.10's. i put them in mine cause i had an aode in it. then blew it and put a 5speed in and wish i would of stayed with the 3.73's i had.

Yea like half the people I ask say 373, and a majority of the rest say 410(except for the one guy that said 430) Its mostly driven on the street, once in a while on the e-way. I love driving, so a nice cruise down 12 mile is more enjoyable for me than a trip down 696 anyway. Maybe I'll add a poll to this.

with an AOd I'd put a 4.10 in it my 91 vert had a 4.10 and and I loved it. Just look a used gear over make sure non of the teeth are chipped and it doesn't have abnormal wear patterns and you should be good. Should of taken it to driveline 300 to change the clutches is insane you can almost buy a new differential for that price. specially once its already out of the car.

i'd just do 4.10, at 70 i was around 2700rpm. not too bad i don't think. everyone says if you put 3.73's in an auto car you WILL be dissapointed. and i've heard numerous stories on corral about that happening lol.

Mitch knows what he;s talkin about with the aod cars. 4.10's are nothing in an aod car my buddy just had that set up and you don't really even know it's there. 4.30 will really wake the car up, and for a great everyday converter if TCI still makes it is the 433100 it's a real 3000 with stock and bolt on set ups and retains lock up. IMO won't find a better aod converter for a bolt on car. Sold alot back in the ramcharger days
