I have a 99 Jeep Cherokee with 4 wheel drive and a 3.5 inch lift. Just starting hearing this noise about a week ago. Only happens when I am turning into a driveway or parking space. Sounds louder when I turn left. It is a slight thumping sound. Not real loud but can feel it in the floor board and steering wheel. ANyone have a clue?

I was thinking something like that myself. I wonder how hard that is to install. Probably should do both sides.

u-joint costs like $9. they arent tough to do, the only thing you sometimes have to fight is rust/ corroded bolts.

1) remove tire
2) remove the caliper/rotor
3) there are 3 bolts that hold the hub assembly in (on the backside of the spindle. remove the upper and rear most and only loosen the front one
4) with the front one loosened a 1/4" or so, put the socket on it (no ratchet) and turn the steering wheel so the socket gets wedged between the bolt and axle housing. this will push the hub assembly loose and outward from the spindle, it beats trying to pry it out.
5) remove the hub/ axle assembly
6) R&R the u-joint
7) install reverse of removal

i did my passenger side in the fall and it took me 30 minutes

Also noticed some differential fluid leaking out the front passenger side axle tube. Is there a seal in there? How easy is that to fix?

IIRC you have to remove Diff to change that seal. I would pull the Diff cover and have a look at the Diff bearings. Usually leaking is a bad sign. Also sounds like your clunk could be a bad U-joint. Check the ball joints to.

yeah, you have to pull the carrier, and if it is a CAD axle, it gets even more involved
