how does he break the speed of sound?

I'm guessing a controlled dive during free fall. If he does reach those speeds, the trouble will then be getting out of that dive and into a flat position to try and shed some speed before deploying the shoot. Imagine if he deploys the chute at too high a speed, and it tears, or a cord breaks, he'll be a human pancake. That's if he even lives through the g forces at those speeds. It really is neat, but super crazy too! If anyone can pull it off it's him.

Probably would use a series of chutes to slow down....like a small one to slow him down from 700mph and straighten him out first (like they do sometimes when you jump tandom). Plus, as he falls, he will slow down naturally as the atmosphere gets "thicker", creating more resistance.

That's awesome. I learned a lot about Col John Stapp while living in New Mexico and this guy was a nut as well. He's a big reason that there are seatbelts in vehicles nowadays. I was lucky enough to work near this place and see a few sled shots. I Snapped a picture of my car there as well. The world needs crazy ass people sometimes to learn new things.
