Saturn Possible timing chain?

I am trying to fix my dads DD and it seems like a timing chain.

1. wont start
2. will fire oddly 1/4
3. added starting fluid and it fired over but back fired up the TB and did not stay running.
4. has alot of miles
5. showed little symptoms of this b4.


Anything else I should check? I still have to check the oil for any water.
 
I am gonna go out on a limb here and take a wild ass geuss that its a 94-99 model with a 1.9 sohc engine ? If so pull the valve cover and see how much slack the chain has.

do a compression test and post the results.

I kind of guessed the chain b/c of the milage and it would just not start one day.
 
well guys thanks for helping me, you guys are great for ALWAYS being in the gen tech help section!

I went back and tried to start it like it was flooded, Since it was a girl who could not get it started last time ??

BAM fired up, a little pedal and got it to idle fine. let it warm up, test drive, cool down and try to start it again and its fine.

I hate when I get called to fix stuff thats not broken :)
