To the OP, if you decide to fix the rust, I'd consider finding an out of state door & having it painted. There's a guy in Imlay City who goes down south & gets rust free metal for us living in the rust belt. I can't think of the business name though. He might be able to help.
 
My dads equinox is a few years old and already rusting at the bottoms of the doors on the inside.

I think it's southern truck, just north of imlay on 53.
