Rod Knock on Ford 2.0L SPI engine

Anyone ever worked on any of these engines? I'm looking at buying an escort from my buddy and he says it needs a rod bearing because it will knock a bit under load. A friend of his that does all his car repairs says that hes done them before and just pulled the pan and fished new rod bearings in. I'd hate to buy it and then end up having to throw a motor in it...

Any input?

Well there are some variables there......I believe on a Escort you are able to remove the pan and do bearings......HOWEVER, this is all depending on the condition of the crank, and cap.....A quick swap out like that requires a very nice condition crank and cap, otherwise you are going ot blow out your new bearing.

I have a focus with a SPI engine and my research says they are good engines when they are working...and when they get jacked up they usually have many problems that pop up, ie the fan relays blow and over heat the engine, which causes the valve guides to get spit into the engine...usually requiring a costly rebuild...buy it with the intention of putting a new engine in it, then you wont have surprises when you find more problems

As soon as I hear any rod knock I just replace the motor. The crank IS ddamaged at this point. New bearings might solve the issue for a few hundred miles, maybe a few thousand miles, but in the end, it will end badly.
PG on 8 Mile had at least 2 wrecked Focus cars recently dropped in.

Yeah that was my thoughts, that the crank is probably effed up. Well its only 15 bucks for the bearings and a couple hours of labor, so I will probably try that and worse case I will get a junkyard motor for it
