Ram pickup repeats as Motor Trend Truck of the Year

For the second year, the Ram 1500 pickup has won one of the most coveted industry awards: Motor Trend Truck of the Year.

Even though it's not a new truck per se, the Ram managed to beat out the newly redesigned Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra.

But the Ram isn't just a two-peat for the first time ever without good reason: The award, to a large extent, celebrates its new diesel engine, the first in a light-duty pickup in years.

Ram was chosen from among nine contenders, the magazine says. The trucks, which included pickups and vans, were all tested at a proving ground in the heart of truck country, Uvalde, Texas.

Ram stood apart because of its new diesel engine and eight-speed transmission, which easily topped the other models in fuel economy. the EcoDiesel, as Ram calls it, delivered 15 miles a gallon under the extreme testing conditions, then 21 mpg in more casual city/highway driving.

Yet the Ram was deemed fully capable of doing all the things that pickup trucks do. For starters, it is rated as being able to tow up to 9,200 pounds.

"This isn't just a new engine," Motor Trend writes. "This is, strictly speaking, a different technology for the segment."

The magazine's editor note that the last diesel in a light-duty truck about 15 years was a noisy, clattering, smoky contraption. The new modern ones are smooth, quiet and soot-free.

They also lauded the Ram's optional air suspension and the real wood and other touches in its upscale Laramie Longhorn.

Ram is Chrysler Group's truck brand, having been split off from the Dodge brand. Beside Ram 1500, Silverado and Sierra, other trucks in the competition included the Ram Heavy Duty, and Toyota Tundra pickups; and the Ford Transit Connect, Mercedes-Benz Sprinter, Nissan NV200, and Ram ProMaster vans

I like the new RAM trucks (I am pretty brand loyal to Ford)

Having owned a few trucks(08 F150 XLT, 2010 Raptor, and 2004 F250 Harley Davidson Powerstroke) I will say I really like the new style of the RAM. I however cant begin to understand why they didnt test a base or close to base model with the diesel. For $57k you are into 250 FX4 range which has close to the same features. That isnt the argument tho, read thru some of the comments on the page, sift thru the BS ones and pay attention because some people do make some pretty good points. I wouldnt doubt that this article was highly "influenced" by some execs of RAM and MT. (as they normally seem)

I am glad they offer a light duty diesel but I am hoping they stop over pricing their trucks. If you wait one year on RAM product you get the damn thing for almost 25% off lol. Ford and GM sell a TON of trucks then they just pretty much have to give away these RAMs at the end of the year. Look at the rebates for F150 some are pretty specific but the RAM rebates are on pretty much and combination of truck you can think of and for 5-12k in savings based on options chosen.

My ecoboost f150 eats rams and shits bowties lol!! I almost bought a ram since my dad works for Chrysler the truck does not even compare in my eyes and they are over priced

But you would have gotten employee discount...

I just think the Ram is the best looking truck. And a Hemi too...

they dont make a supercab

Who cares what motor trend says about the Ram. The marketplace has spoken and the F150 is the consumer's best pick for the last 34 years.

Curious why there were no f series in the contest.

the criteria is for redesigned trucks... even tho the RAM only got a new engine and wasnt redesigned in the least bit... look at the lineup of cars tested... i think if they are testing "truck of the year" it should probably be every truck sold to the public.. thats just me tho

Just curious..... Of all the people that want to point out how "unfair" , in one way or another, this test is, how do you feel about the new issue of hot rod magazine. You know, the one where they tested a $65,870 Mustang and a $61,140 Camaro against a $41,140 Challenger. Let's talk about "overpriced" now.

Point is...... Magazine tests will always be unfair in one way or another. Whether it be at price point, model year, or simply one car from the press pool having many more abusive miles on it. Personally, I think the COTY and TOTY awards are pretty much a joke. There's always biased opinions, and the awards are judged on opinion.

I test drove the ford & gm trucks,I bought the Ram.IT gets good mpg, it rides great nicer than some cars I have owned.Ford had to buy back my friends brand new truck because it would sway so bad when towing his car trailer. Also the Ram was the best deal 215.00 a mth.
One more thing I didn't buy a pickup truck for racing 5.0's lol
