Pardon my slicks and tubes ignorance

So, i just picked up some used Welds and went ro install my et streets and tubes. The tubes have a brass threaded nut/ collar that i assume goes on the outside of the wheel, but the hole in the wheel is too small. The tube.

And the eheel.. looks like this wheel has had these collars on there before.


Do i drill the hole out a bit or is that a bad idea?

Side note, if you are running tubes, make sure you screw the tires to the wheel.

take the threaded nut off put the tube threw and screw the nut back on tight. mine are like that. then screw the tires to the rim

Thanks for the feedback. Not really interested in going with rim screws so i think I'll roll the dice and see how they work without the tubes. The interweb research seems to be 50/50 split between those that do and those that don't. I can always add the screws and tubes later and i have street tires.

Thats what i figured and felt dumb for asking. But the holes in the rims are about 0.030" too small to fit the threaded portion through. Seems the hole is about 7/16 (0.437 on my calipers) and the stem on the tube is about 0.475" or so. Looks like my next biggest drill is. 0.486" so it will only take a few seconds to open it up further. I was wondering if i am screwing up the rim if i chose to go back to tubeless and a regular valve stem.

If i do go with screws and tubes, what do i use for screws? Seems like the bead on the tire is plenty fat.

A lot of the fast guys don`t run tubes......they think they gain a tenth or 2 in the 1/4 mile...........Dave at Victory will or should have the rim screws in stock........hes at Merrimen and 96.......in front of Holbrooks.......or goto Metro bolt.....Grandriver and beech......

Are the fast guys still screwing? This is a a 12.5 Caprice. So, not terribly fast but heavy @ 4060 race weight. Maybe I'll mark the tires and see if they move much.

Internet lore says softening the bead with acetone helps them stick to the rim better and avoid a lot of the leaks... any thoughts?

My point was that if you do end up using the tubes you have to screw the tires. If the tire spins at all on the wheel chances are it will tear the valve out of the tube..........I know I wouldn't take the risk.

Understood. I guess I am bouncing between 3 options.
1) Slap the tires on and run them w/o screws or tubesand see how they run.
2) Run w/o tubes but screw them.
3) Tubes and Screws.. If yer tubin, you should be screwed.. makes sense to me, don't want to rip valve stems off $60 tubes.

Think I am going to try option #1 and build from there as needed. Thanks for all the good responses.

Weight was last fall. Still carb. 4L60E Yank, 4.10, eaton posi, moser axles. New frame too. No complete pics. Just plumbing line lock and rear brakes tonight. Need trans lines weld up exhaust install shifter and wire up the trans controller
