painters please help

im getting ready to spray a single stage urathane, but im not sure if i should sand the car down to bare metal or just sand it past the factory clear and do it that way. its a 90 hatch. theres a couple spots on the body where its down to bare metal already because i had to fix a small rust issue. any advice would be greatly appreiciated
 
My painter told me that the best thing to paint on is the factory primer. He said that it's better than sanding all the way to the metal. He also used some sort of special primer for painting the car and sanded all of the store bought grey/black stuff that I initially started using. His primer was some off-white colored stuff. No idea what it was though. Not sure if that helps at all.
 
Sand that bitch down with 36grit and spray it :) J/K


If the factory paint is in decent condition sand it down with some 600 then go back over it with some 800 by hand or lightly with a DA, but try not to break through the clear because you will then have some bullseyes that may be hard to bury or can come back to haunt you in the summer when the finish shrinks. Basically use the factory paint as a primer, but remember to picture frame every edge first with a red scotch, because theres nothing worse than a brand new paint job that's flaking on the edges ;)

Any areas that have been primed or feathered I would recommend a sealer but you can get away without it.

I would toss on some primer/sealer... There is a really decent all purpose stuff I use that is just a basic epoxy primer. Spray on 2 coats just before doing the color and your golden.

I would really consider doing a primer surfacer and blocking it out... You spent alot of money on the paint might as well make it a nice paintjob via a few extra hours of sanding.
