Paint Protection Anyone?

Thinking about getting into PPF (Paint Protection Film). Also referred to as the "clear bra". It's similar to vinyl but much much thicker and a lot different to work with.

Here is a flash video of a car that had PPF on the front bumper. It hit a garage doing 8mph. Scuffed up the bumper yet it still protected the paint. Peeled the PPF off and reinstalled a new piece for a fraction of the cost of a new paint job.

You can scale the video smaller by making your browser window smaller (if you are using a big monitor and is making the video distorted).

Primarily for use on vulnerable leading surfaces, and areas of likely contact, such as hoods, headlights, edges of doors, bumpers, side mirrors, rocker panels and body contour projections.

Crystal clear, high gloss, non-yellowing urethane film
Aggressive, weather resistant, ultra transparent, acrylic adhesive
Clings tenaciously, yet removes cleanly, without residue, from fully cured paint surfaces
Extremely flexible, to conform with no wrinkle or creep
Fast, easy installation
Superior anti-corrosion formulation
Highly resistant to UV, oils, gas, and chemicals
Virtually invisible, does not alter the aesthetics of the vehicle or its factory finish

I've been reading a lot more on the stuff, seams a lot of race cars do this so if they happen to spin out and hit a side wall it still protects the car.

To give you an "example" of pricing, An 06 mustang GT hood would run around $200 for the film, then you would have to pay for installation unless you would want to try to install it yourself. The price to repaint your hood could run you anywhere from $400-$1200 depending on if you "know someone" or the body shop you go to. Remember this is just an example, I don't know any actual pricing yet because I'm not a dealer (yet), but it give you a rough idea.

By the way... don't fall for the cheap knock-offs on eBay, they all "claim" to sell PPF but its actually just the 2 mil thick clear vinyl, Hell.. I'll sell you that stuff if you want. Ask them how thick their material is, lol True PPF is 8-30 mils thick depending on the protection you want and where its going to be applied.

If I decide to get involved with PPF my membership will also include a 3 day 1-on-1 hands on training (which I would have to fly out to their HQ in MA). It would also make me a certified installer which will allow me to warranty the product for the life of the car.

Definitely a big investment so I'm taking my time in deciding. I just was wondering if anyone here on MM would be interested in getting some PPF for their vehicle in the future.

My stripe guy carries that stuff. I have some for my door bars, but I still haven't put it on .

what is the white film that people put on for vehicle transport at dealerships? i would like something that's easy to take on and off but doesn't cost $400 for a roll. i would only want as mentioned enough to cover my front clip at times.

my paint is expensive so i like the idea but i've never personally seen a setup in person that i would trust on my paint job that is similar to what you described. the ppf i saw at sema which was 05 when i went wasn't something i'd want to leave on my car so for my application it wouldn't be nice at all.

for someone who expected to run into problems such as a race car though it was a nice alternative but again the pieces i saw on actual vehicles that were older and subjected to sun had yellowed so it looke horrible on light surfaces.

also, not sure about what your looking at but what i saw didn't come off that clean as they claim. hopefully it's changed quite a bit. it's a wonderful idea but i don't see you making money here with it. other websites and places where people are more worried about their finish though you would do well if the product does what it claims.

good luck!

i think there is a relatively big market out there if you advertise in the right areas. good luck if you go for it..

i like kandied's idea also, something cheap to just stick on to protect while trailering and the such...

You need to go after the Corvette crowd, I would have done it but it's to late. Maybe if I get the car repainted

I am picking some up for my STi after it get's re-sprayed. The front clip is fucked from getting behind a 911 gt2 at high speeds in new mexico (aka sandblasted the front of my car).

it looks awesome when it first gets put on but after a few thousand miles it swirls and looks cloudy compared to the rest of the car. for like 700 they do the whole front of the car, or thats what it gets marked up to.

That's cause the material used is cheap shit. The stuff I'm looking at getting is warrantied for the life of the car, peeling, cloudy swirls, all that stuff is covered under the warranty and will be replaced for free by the manufacture, they even pay me for labor to strip and reinstall :thumbsups

I'll let you guys know when I get into it, another month I'll be getting it and then doing a few family members cars for practice, then I'll head to MA to get trained & certified.
