Okay - another wiring dilemma..

So my car had no radio in it when I got it... Just a hole in the dash.

I'm working on installing an Alpine unit and had NO problem when installing the radio in my 86...

I've found the two plugs that SHOULD be it. They do respond to the ignition as one is a constant hot, one is key-on hot, and the other responds to the headlights... But, in my picture, you can see my problem.... The shape of the plugs are the same on both plugs, so they won't plug in...

what the heck is going on here? Any ideas?

Bet if u trace wires they are the illumination signal. If u do not have constant and switched power then just tap the ones u have found.

Ok, i have it figured out. Only one of the plugs was used for the factory radio. To better understand you can look at page 11 of that digram I sent you. The factory radio only had a switched power yellow/black (no need for constant as the is no memory on older radios) and illuination light blue/red coming through a 2 pin harness. Ground was through the chassis of the radio to the dash. The other connector you have goes to something else, maybe the hatch release, heater head illumination or bulb outage display.

Best bet is to use only the one connector for switched power and illumination. Run a groung to the vehicle body and run a constant 12V from the fuse panel with an inline fuse rated at 15A. Don't tap into the line you found that has a constant 12V on it. It may not handle the load of the radio and whatever other circiuit is on that line.
