oil pump shaft questions

hey everyone,

i just bought an 87 302 mated to a T5 transmission. it was running a edelbrock intake (carb) with a new MSD distributor. the previous owner ran the oil pump shaft without a retaining clip on it, and the oil shaft is so tight on the distributor i cant pull it off.

since im doing EFI, im not using the msd ignition, but can i use an oil pump shaft without a retainer clip? if so what kind do i need to use? or am i going to have to take my oil pump out and install a shaft with a clip on it. also i noticed instead of a bolt to hold down the distributor in place, this engine has a stud sticking out. do i have to use a bolt to hold this one down?

u can use it without a reatainer but u might pull shaft out sometimes and its a bbbbb to get back in place....and yes u have to have a distr hld down and or a nut or bolt will work

ok so should i get an ARP type oil shaft? i heard those where a bit more resistant to twisting and such. a trick i did to get my oil shaft in when it was in my other engine, even with the retaining clip it was hard, i used some blue permatex and dabbed a bit on the top of where it goes into the distributor, so it wouldnt come off

that retainer is only there to keep the shaft in place during assembly and keep it from pulling out with the distrubitor. Not a big deal but a pain if it drops. As far as shaft..doesn't matter.
