88 5.0 5-speed with BBK cold air intake, shortie headers, x-pipe, and flowmasters. Also Did plugs, wires, cap, rotor, and set timing at 14. Also did mass air conversion on it with no change. Car idles a little rough and is running rich to the point of burning your eyes standing next to it. Also will miss and backfire through the intake. Any help would be appreciated.

You'll need to scan it in real time and look at the coolant temp. Sounds like a bad temp sensor (not the sender, the one that sends data to the ecm) but id scan it first just to be sure.

Thanks guys, I'm gonna do some investigating (drinking and cussing) this weekend. Any insight as to where the fuel pressure reg and temp sensor are located on an 88 5.0?

Fuel pressure regulator is on the fuel rail and has a vacuum line going to it. The engine coolant temp sensor is screwed into the heater tube (black tube running along passenger side of lower intake)

yeah i'd start by making sure there's proper vacuum to the fpr. and the water temp sender is only like 15 bucks at autozone so might as well throw one in.

Yeah I called on the temp sensor today. A buddy is gonna let me use his MAF sensor to see if that may have something to do with it also. The car seems to run a whole lot better when warm but; not great. The temp sensor is making a whole lot of sense to me. Leaky injector would make hard starting or act as if flooded wouldnt it? Don't think that is it. MAF - temp sensor - Fuel pressure reg - O2 sensor(s), thats my plan of attack. Brick wall may be after that if no problem is found! lol!

O.K. So car still runs like shit! Tried another MAF meter and changed the coolant temp sensor and still, no change. Driving at a steady speed it seems like it is running on 6 or 7 cylinders and loading up. Nail it to the floor and everything happens like it is supposed to. It will however, straighten up and run great once in a while but, it is short lived. About to pull hair out! And no, my headlights are not the problem!(mustang55)! Lol! Could it be the ignition module?

Found vaccum lines all over the place. Some plugged, some open to atmosphere, and some in the wrong place! Routed them all where they are supposed to be but; car still idles all over the place and seems to be rich as hell (will burn your eyes with the fumes). Anyone know of a test for TPS, IBS, and O2 sensors. I'm a newb with a multi-meter but; do have one. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

FINALLY!!!!!!! Chased down the problem! The vaccum lines were hooked up wrong. Wrong one going to FPR, none at all going to EGR, the one supposed to go to EGR solenoid was open to atmosphere. Car idles and drives perfect now! It just barely avoided a brick wall! Lol!
