Need a trans guy for an '03 4WD Envoy

Hey,
The trans went yesterday on my buddy's '03 4WD Envoy. He put it in drive to leave work, it went bang, and then he could only move in reverse. Any quick diagnostics (other than, "it's broke") and who would you trust to fix it?
