Need a new lawn mower. Where should I go? What should I get?

My 14 year old Scotts branded mower has rusted through in the back corner of the deck to the point where it's time to be replaced. The 6hp Briggs motor has been awesome and still starts on the first pull, even the first start in the spring.

Where should I go for a replacement? Weingartz, Home Depot, Lowes, Menards? I need ~22", self-propelled, bag and mulch, and the handle needs to fold to store in my mini-shed. Which brands/motors should I go towards/away from? This last Briggs was great but I've heard "they don't make them like they used to...". I don't mind paying for quality if I get 15+ years out of it.

Thanks.

Ive seen a lot of great deals at Lowes lately on Husqvarna mowers. Some with B&S engines and some with Honda engines. Seemed you could get them with FWD, RWD, or AWD 21 or 22" cut for between $350-$500. Thats the route ill be going for my next one. Ive also heard the BS engines "arent as good anymore". But mine is a BS engine also and ive had it for 7 years. Never changed the oil or added oil and abuse it lol. Oil level is still full to the top and in the last year or 2 its finally starting to darken up. Only reason im opting for a new one is its a push mower and i want a self propelled one.

I picked up a RWD Husqvarna with a 175cc Briggs a couple of years back from Lowes for $400. It has all of the features you need. I have no complaints. They don't sell that model any longer, but now offer a model with a 190cc Briggs that's AWD for the same price.

I use a Craftsman with electric start. Hardly use the electric start though because it will start on the first pull without a primer. Other than the drive system not being strong enough to pull it in tall grass; I think its a great mower.

My Sears Craftsman mower sucks ass. Hasn't run well since a few months into owning it. Hard to start (harder than it should be) and the idle is super erratic. I've tried cleaning the filter, changing the oil, cleaning the carb, etc... it's just crap.

I have a few year old Craftsman push mower with a Honda engine. It does my 70'x220' yard with no issues.

Prior to that I had a John Deere with electric start and a Briggs engine that was awesome as well.

I had a Craftsman leaf blower (which is used, what? 3 to 5 months of the year) that was 89.99 and the rip cord string broke. Took and hour to take apart, the new rip cord assy was 45.99. I scrapped it and bought another new one. BUT I shouldn't have. Both Craftsman blowers are hard to start, takes at least 10+ pulls each time and doesn't warm up easily.

My neighbor has a large yard and just bought that exact mower last week. He likes it so far.

I am very happy with it. Took me a few cuts to get used to it. It doesn't maneuver as easily as a typical single blade/small deck mower, but I'm used to it now and I can cut my grass in half the time.

Got me thinking now...

Dooooooo it! :) Oh...and btw....I did NOT pay the $1099. I got extremely lucky. I walked in and they had the display which was "REMAN'D" for $699. So try and find a deal on one. I completely stole it. Got the full warranty as it was being sold new and it starts in 1 pull every single time, even after this long cold winter.

My yard is only 1/4 acre minus the house, garage, and driveway so I have no need for a huge mower. A friend was looking to sell his lightly used 21" 190cc Honda so I picked that up this weekend for 1/3 the cost of a new one. It has the thermoplastic deck so no worry about this one rusting.

The old mower will be going on Craigslist in the next couple of days. It still runs great if anyone wants it.
