More jobs to be cut at GM, CEO’s report says

Three months into its life after bankruptcy, General Motors Co. has about 10,500 more U.S. workers than called for by year’s end under its previously stated turnaround plan, the Detroit Free Press reported.

GM said Wednesday it has cut its U.S. hourly work force by 21 percent and salaried ranks by 18.2 percent so far this year, according to a progress report by CEO Fritz Henderson, the paper reported. Most of the extra positions are held by hourly workers and, given GM’s recent plans to add shifts at assembly plants, it was unclear how many more positions will be cut, the Free Press said.

General Motors Co. is working to get as much of the company’s restructuring completed by year’s end as possible, Henderson told reporters Wednesday. He outlined the company’s 90-day performance, touting new vehicle launches that were beating company expectations, the paper said.

Henderson said buyout and retirement packages “fell short of our expectations,” but he noted the “good news” is that GM has added back some workers into production because of increased demand, the story said. (Detroit Free Press)

They have been announcing job cuts my entire life, how can there still be any people working there?

well here is there problem, they say "we need to cut 10k jobs to be profitable", so they cut them. Then realize they still arent making a profit, so they say, "well, we need to cut another 10k jobs", and they still arent making a profit

I don't understand where all these people were needed in the first place. How can you have been so powerful with all these people, and now you lay them off, yet you still are still not powerful.

That is a good point, 1-2 years ago my buddy that works at a local GM plant was working LONG hours I think they had them on 7x12's for a while. He was making buku money. I guess some plants are just more busy than others.

It is because they used to build cars and then put massive incentives on them to keep them moving. Now they are only building to market demand, which means WAY less people. I have to think that the number is actually less than that, since they have added shifts at some of the plants building the hot cars and trucks.
