Has anyone taken apart their alternators? I am trying to get the case off my 4.6's alternator and am having trouble. I took off the pulley, back cover, and voltage regulator, I can get the case to split a little over an 1/8th of an inch and then no further. Anyone know if I am missing something?

why are you taking apart your alternator... wouldnt it be easier just to get a new one

I think you have to use a small allen wrench to hold the brushes off the comm in order for them to clear the bearing in the rear.
I haven't taken one apart in a while so I can't remember for sure. Go to a local rebuilder and ask for help. they know if you screw something up on the reassembly you will be back.
