Might move back to attend Kettering

Moved out of Troy back in 06 to Arizona, now that I'm looking for another college to attend, I read more about Kettering University in Flint.

I should be moving down this summer! Finally get to introduce the TBSS to Michigan! =)

Anyone Attend this University?

I didn't go there but I know quite a few people who do or did. It's a good school but from what I've heard living in Flint suuuuucks.

My daughter is currently attending Kettering. She is already home from her first semester...

There are a few MM members who have also attended...

I was thinking about going there but my mom didnt like the idea of me living in Flint. If you're looking for good engineering schools, I'm going to Lawrence tech in southfield and its really nice. Ltlhomer and a few others have went there and can vouch for it as well.

Thanks for all the input guys!

I'm really interested in the school because of the Co-op scheduling and the job placement they work out with the students. I've got one more semester of GM ASEP to go through, then we'll see the outcome.

Kettering is a great school, but I would question coming back to Michigan right now at all. Unless you are gambling that this state will be turned around in three or four years (it hasn't happened yet in 9), I would look elsewhere.

If you want to come back here top find a job, I would look at U of M for it's alternative fuels and propulsion program. Solar power, batteries, ets. That would be a sure job when you got out.

Kettering was a pretty good school, and I had more than my fair share of fun in Flint, mainly because you can get away with a lot of shit you probably shouldn't as they have bigger problems on their hands. :buds:

I graduated there in '07. It's the co-op program that made me decide to go there vs Mich Tech. If I were to do it again, I'd probably make the same choice. Except continue straight on to an engineering masters vs. trying to work and do a masters. Kettering's alternative fuels and energy stuff is getting much better, and if you get in with the right profs, you can do a lot while there.
If you are anything but 100% sure you want to go into the engineering field, Kettering isn't for you. Credits do not transfer out of there too easily.

If you have questions, shoot me a message.

I graduated from there back in 99'. It is a good school for engineering. And you need a co-op job while enrolled there. That is the main reason I went was the work experience you get along the way.

I also got my masters degree in engineering after Kettering and can honestly say, my undergrad was way harder and way more in depth than my masters at another school. Hell, we even rewrote the curriculum for one class during my masters classes. That was our 'project'.

As for Flint, it's not bad if you know where to stay away from. Around the school isn't bad. A few blocks in the wrong direction, and you know pretty quickly. We had a few cars get broken into while I was there. For the most part we kept out of trouble though. My favorite joke while I was there was: "They say Detroit is the Asshole of America. Well Flint is 50 miles up it."

That quote must have stuck with the school, as it was one of our favorites amongst my group of buddies.

Graduated in December of 98. The school was great for me when I was there, but from what I can tell it has changed a great deal. Many of those changes are for the good though. The new engineering building was just a pipe dream for my class.

You need to be comfortable with a small school. By the time you get to your sophomore year, you will pretty much know everyone in your classes. There are pros and cons to that. You will also know the majority of the professors, and I believe that is a great help.

As for Flint, we knew it wasn't the greatest neighborhood, but we had fun. The cops watch out for you because college pranks/BS is nothing compared to what the locals are doing. Be mindful of your surroundings, but don't be scared.

I would go again in a heartbeat.

what do you want to study?

Mechanical Engineering, mainly focusing on the Automotive portion, SRS, Alternative fuels, etc.. all the stuff that is what cars rely on for now and the future.

Thanks for all of your input! I just wasn't sure if I had to go out and find a job, or if the school does it all for me.

Still a few minor details that I want to fully get a grasp of to make the final call and send all my transcripts, etc over. I don't mind the area considering I'll be by the school and in Troy on the weekends.

Thanks!

Honestly, Theres nothing else that I see myself doing, or rather be...
