Matt Hughes v.s. BJ Penn.....

For those that saw the fight, discuss...

I think it went just as I expected. Hughes is a different fighter now that he first met Penn and lost.

Bj penn kicked his ass first 2 rounds, and ran out of gas... the only thing that beat Bj penn was his conditioning, not matt hughes

i knew as long as hughes didnt get submitted early in the 1rst or 2nd round he'd win. i think the eye poke played a pretty big roll in bj's domination of the early rounds, the same thing happened in the gsp fight. i knew hughes wouldnt tap again and it showed a lot of heart lasting through that brutal submission. all in all i thought it was a badass fight and was happy with the outcome. on another note, how bullshit/staged do you think the GSP comment was at the end of the fight?

Yea, I think it was a pretty good fight, but he ran out of gas, you could see he was so tired, it was over for him. He came out pretty strong in the first two rounds, but after trying to submit huges, he just ran outta gas.

His eye got poked!! It happens all the time, he was crying to the ref... Bj should have jumped all over him, no one stopped the fight(matt hughes did).. you don't stop fighting because your eye got poked, the fight was not going his way so he took a break, and regrouped with that stoppage... Oh and the played no role in the fight, it was a poke it got all better after the stoppage

I take it you don't like hughes :beatdeadh

So what happened? I really wanted to see this fight but didn't get a chance to. How did Hughes beat him? How many rounds did it go? 3? Also, who won the Swick/Loiseau fight? That was looking to be another good one.

I was also wondering why Hughes fought Penn for the title. GSP beat Penn a couple months back, shouldn't he have been next in line to fight Hughes? Or is he injured or something I'm missing.

Hughes won in 3, referee stopped it.. Hughes was on top, and had had Bj's arm tied up, and was beating him up... Swick won by decision, kind of a boring fight

Cool, thanks Val. I have missed the last couple ppv's and I really wanted to see some of these fights.

Matt Hughes didn't beat BJ Penn, 6 weeks of training camp beat BJ Penn. When Hughes said he was sorry BJ didn't show up conditioned for a 5 round fight, he should have said "thank god", not "I'm sorry". Penn was clobbering Hughes at will for 10 minutes(from the opening bell, not because of the eye poke), then ran out of gas harder than probably anyone I've ever seen. He was literally standing there getting punched in the face with his hands at his waist

If Penn had sunk that armbar/triangle with 2 minutes to go instead of 45 seconds, it'd be a different story.

I like Matt Hughes a lot and I think he's a badass fighter. He's the most dominant WW champ ever. I thought that he would beat Penn this time because he's a better fighter than when they first fought. Regardless of how it happened, he beat him. But I will say that Penn is "designed" to beat Hughes. He has great standup and great ground game/submission skills. Hughes is definitely not known for his standup and almost always goes for the takedown. But sometimes it's hard to stop the takedown of someone as strong as Hughes. Anyway, I didn't see this fight yet so I can only go by what you guys have said. Either way, between Hughes, Penn, and GSP, I think any of these fights could go either way.

dude, an eye poke makes a big difference and the fight does stop if that happens, didnt you see the penn vs gsp fight? same thing happened there, he poked gsp in the eye and it totally changed the fight. it does happen a lot, and when it happens the fighter is allowed all the time they need to recover. also it was a good strategy by hughes, he knew penn wouldnt last because penn barely ever lasts more than 2 rounds. he always gets a fast win or he looses by decision because he runs out of gas. you say "penn's lack of conditioning lost the fight" well isnt that the same as "hughe's great conditioning won the fight"? im not takin anything away from bj penn, he's a bad mofo and i honestly thought the only way hughes could win is by getting through the first 2 rounds. INSTG8R, gsp was supposed to fight hughes, but had a groin injury, so penn got the fight. and i agree with you, gsp and penn are the only guys that can beat hughes right now.

Well said. And thanks, I figured it had to be because of an injury. So I guess GSP will get the next shot at Hughes when he is healed. Should be a good one.

yea, gsp is fighting him. it seemed really staged though, cause after the fight rogan was like "so whats next for matt hughes? you've already beaten everyone bla bla" and he was like "well whoever they put up against, which i think is gonna be gsp, so i cant wait" somethin like that, then gsp came in the ring and like shook his hand and stuff, then he's like "oh yea, i wasnt impressed with your performance tonight at all" or something like that to hughes, it seemed like a total media ploy though. oh yea, Loiseau seemed really timid for the first two rounds (which he lost) but then looked like his normal self in the 3rd round and dominated swick, but wasnt enough.

hughes won, i expected to see a little more ground and pound out of hughes but I think he underestimated penn.

Val, your right he shouldn't have stopped the fight over the eye poke. That kind of thing happens, and I think probably played into his passive nature in the fight for the most part. Eventually the better fighter prevailed.

Well as much as I hate that BJ Penn lost I will give Matt Hughes alot of credit for surviving the triangle choke. As far as the whole eye poke thing it was an accident and Matt was getting his ass handed to him way before then. Matt is a great fighter but in my opinion BJ is on a different level. BJ naturally fights at 155lb. Matt is a huge welterweight. For the first two rounds Matt was doing an excellent job blocking punches with his face.

Some facts that can not be argued:

BJ has better standup than Matt.
BJ has a better ground game.
Matt had better conditioning last night and that is what won him the fight.

The saddest part of the fight was at the end when Matt said that he was too strong for BJ, lol. Yeah Right. I give him the conditioning portion but cmon be real be could not take BJ down until he gassed out.

The funniest part of last night was when GSP told Matt that he was not impressed with his performance. I can't wait until GSP gets the title and sends the hillbilly running back to his sheep.
