LT1 Optispark

In the process of replacing the optispark in my Formula and looking for a replacement recommendation. Normally I would try to upgrade, but the MSD is $500+ and I have seen alot of bad reviews. Any thoughts or experiences with Summit, Jegs, Oreilly, MSD, Chandler optis? Are there any I should definitely stay away from?

On another note, what was GM thinking when they designed this contraption?!?! :banghead:

I think a lot of people have good luck with the Chandler Opti, its cheap too. The rest in your list are really not that good, ive heard of lots of issues over the years with them.

One thing that is a good idea is to take off the cap and rotor and lock-tite the rotor screws and silicone the cap back on to prevent anything leaking on it. Also watch that your waterpump is healthy, becasue the weep hole is right above the opti, and when it goes it leaks water/coolant all over it.

I think there is a ls1 coil per plug conversion not sure on price

yes there is. It will make the car run on an LS1 99-02 computer and the opti is totally gone. It runs around $1000 to do it yourself + an $700-800 harness. If you ever want to go this route, I can mod your existing harness to make it work

I was leaning towards the Chandler, but the low price actually concerns me since all the other options are so expensive. A $1700.00 LS1 coil conversion is completely out of the questions. Heck, you can almost buy an entire car for that amount :(

I think the water pump I removed had a small leak, but the weep hole was plugged!?! Is it a good idea to plug the weep hole?

not a good idea to plug the weep hole, I would replace the water pump for sure or else you will have the same problem. Any distributor I know of does not like to get wet. Chandler comes with a lifetime warranty

That is the one good thing about Chandlers.....if they stand behind it.

The water pump has a Meziere electric pump attached to it and after looking a little closer it appears the Meziere has its own weep hole, which makes the factory hole unnecessary. Going to replace the oring, gaskets and rtv and see what happens; probably order the Chandler later today. Thanks for feedback.
