LS1 to cam or not to cam. . . .

I'm swapping a LS1 & 4l60e from a '01 TA in my '84 Monte Carlo.
Goals are poser pro-tourer, excellent street drive-ability w/ "sprited" performance, zero interest in racing.

Headers are planned for the swap, the engine has the LS6 intake, so conventional thinking leads one to believe a cam swap is in order. For my application, I really am not in love with the auto trans and don't want to throw money at it. So, I'm on the fence if a stock converter-friendly cam swap gives a fair hp/dollar ratio for my plan. Just curious to hear your opinions. I'm not going to start a chain reaction of mods on this project. . . . yet.

I would for sure do a Cam and Converter swap! No doubt!
Wont lose MPH really with either and the results would be way worth it.

And if I didn't want to spend $$$ on a converter do you think the hp/$$$ is reasonable, let's say, for a 224R on a 114LSA?

Turbo? Now y'all f'in with me. I'd probably be more inclined to save for a manual swap.

How much does the monte weigh. Keep in mind with a Cam swap...Pushrods,Oil pump, timing chain, valve springs, gaskets, fluids, etc. It adds up very quickly. I personally would just put an LS6 intake, and headers on it. If you not interested in racing a small 224 cam isn't going to give a huge gain. Stock internals and bolt ons should be plenty for spirited driving. If you want it to be funner to drive put a Yank converter in it. Stock internals means rock solid reliability.

cam & converter FTW, talk the 1BADAIR I've heard he know about some magical cam

He is probably talking about the T-REX cam. It's a stupid big camshaft that won't fit with LS6 heads and its PTV clearance is stupid close with stock heads. It makes good power but IMO not automatic friendly. I think it would still be a bear in a six speed and buck a lower RPMS.

haha not a trex.
who told you about it?
one of the ls1 places is using a cam almost exactly like it but it does need a convertor.
with a stock TC a tr224 114 would be ok but not ideal

That's the Larry cam, Larry's custom specs, it's in my engine right now. It worked great last time I had it out. Very impressive. I did use a B&M Holeshot converter though.

Yea, can't say that I'm motivated to spend the $$$ on the cam. I'll just slap on headers and call it good.
