Now my friend recently purchased a black notch mustang which I recently showed videos of. After getting a line on some cheap (dont ask questions) complete ls series motors in any configuration we want from: regular ls1's all the way up to new LS7 corvette stuff, with or without wiring harnesses and any transmission I want. My friend now can afford to put a ls series motor in his car. Now cheap is not going the be a total part of this build, but all out race car and big $$$ is out of the question. For the first season the car will run bone stock besides exahust and computer modifications. What all will I have to do to get say an LQ9 truck motor with a 4l60E into one of these cars?
ls1 mustang.com didnt help much, should I log in and become a member to get a better idea?
My thoughts, tell me if you think they are good or bad:
1. If possible retain the stock K-member and go to a motor plate set-up and set the motor and tranny in the engine bay the best possible way. Or place the motor and fab up plates to extend the fatory location of the 302 mounts to accodomate stock f-body/corvette mounts/soild mount it?
2. Use long tube or mid length F-body headers, or mildily modify f-body headers to work? If that is out of the question I will go to shorty headers in the biggest diameter available. I dont want to fab up headers. and It will have dumps of course.
3. Custom tranny cross member based off the stock mustang crossmember with a plate, or cut and fab up something using the stock cross member location? Or will a whole new crossmember from the pinch rails be necessary?
4. For sure full length subframe connectors after motor and tranny is installed. Possibly a cage if the thing runs fast enough.
5. power steering. If necessary we will switch to a manual rack, but can I hook a stock style ls pump up to the mustang lines somehow?
6. Alternator I was thinking using a stock style ls alternator with the computer etc. and figure out minor wiring issues with the fuel pump relay to run on with the key. Or am I in for a wiring nightmare somehow?
7. Stock style 255 pump for the stocker ls1 with fittings to adapt for the ls motor fuel lines.
8. Driveshaft. I'll call Camerons cove and say do it up.
I know there's more, I need to sleep.
