looking to buy my first chevelle(1972) what should i look out for?

DarkoStoj

A mysterious figure named Darko
going to look at one at around 3:00 today and am real familiar with first gen camaro's, mustangs, pontiacs, etc but never had a chevelle. I know all these older cars have specific problems that need to be checked out before bought and I don't know what any of those are for the chevelle. It is a driver with a 12sec motor and looks good from the pictures. I know the basic things to look out for ie: rust repair, buckling, cleanness, mechanical condition, etc. The only thing I know to check is the engine code because that was the first year that could be checked on these.

thanks

SS or no.... give some details (no I am not in the market) pm if you want!

72's are the least desirable (general census) for the years 66 - 72

Krazybones is correct 72 isn't the most valuable. The 1970 is king, same car in the same condition is worth thousands more as a 70. These cars rust in pretty typical locations front fenders behind the wheels. Look in the trunk behind the package tray. Also you can see the quaters from inside the trunk.

I personally wouldn't pay any more for a numbers matching car these days due to forgeries.

I bought a 72 about 7 years ago I got very lucky I have a very clean car. I believe my car came from Texas.
If you have any specific questions, I have several books for reference.

When I bought my car I looked at minimum 10 cars. lots of driving and lots of stories. Don't be in a rush.

70's that are in the LS6 or LS5 are truely the most desirable yes, but any of of the 66 - 70 are way up there! I am VERY partial to the 67 though and always have been! I could not touch a car like mine in the shape mine is in for bout $25K on up now!

I had a 71. Nice car, if I bought another vintage car I would buy one that was NOT already restored. Mine looked mint until you inspected REAL close. Sold it before the rust popped back out. Different between 71 and 72 was turn signal lenses in front (visually.)

MY $0.02

Wow, yeah mine was a full frame off back in 1978 (have many receipts from then), then it basically sat until 6 years ago when I bought it! I have a few dings, scratches and not a single bubble anywhere. I cannot find any glass or bondo anywhere either! My two rear qtr's were cut though and new steel welded back in! I could not be happier with mine! Was a steal too~ Wish I could find out who actually did it back when as they did a GREAT job!

Sounds nice. I am pretty sure mine was a frame-ON, so they just did what could be seen. What did I know, I bought it for 12 and sold for 16. Probably put 3 into it in 2 years of ownership. Oh well. Funny thing is that the 96 TA I have now is 1000% better driving out of hte box, but no one looks at it like they did the 71....

Sooooo Darko - what did you do???? Post up!
oh forgot to update the thread. The guy sent me about 10 more pictures of the car before I went to look at it, and he really sucked ass at describing the condition and I could tell I didnt want it just from those.

It could of just sat with the other couple cars you are never going to finish.

I'll put $100 that I would whoop your ass in a race as soon as spring hits and the snow melts with one of these cars that i'm "never going to finish"

little late but you have to look at the frame right behind the front tires. They tend to rust right there.
I like the 71-72 better. thats why my 69 had a 72 front end
