Looking to buy a truck... need a little advice

Hey guys, I'm looking to build a budget winter-beater and mild trail rig. Something I can drive from school to work and back home, but also something that's capable on some mild trails and relatively easy to work on and find parts for.

I've settled for an older (1984) Ford F150 4x4. I'm going to check it out this weekend, so I need to know what to really look for before buying. It's got the 5.0L (302?)... ummm 4-speed manual trans, owner said it's not the original motor but it's been in the truck for 60,000 miles. I particularly like this one because it looks pretty cool, and it's already got some nice tires on it. Plus, the price is very reasonable.

Anyways, are there specific things to look for in these trucks? Any problem areas other than the normal bed rusting and rot? How about the 5.0 itself... any details on that?

I'm an import guy and a car guy, so I know little to nothing about 4x4's, Ford V8's and even off roading in general. Advice is appreciated.

Thanks!

this might get more action if you post it in the pub section

302s are great and will last a long time just keep oil in them

also look to see if the oil pan is rusty/rusted out
