Looking for advice on a baasement TV/sound system setup

I am currently redoing my basement, adding a bar, just put a pool table in etc etc.

I plan on putting a 55-65" TV on the wall and some sort of surround system. Easy enough. I just want some suggestions on what everyone would do if it were their house.

So I have a 60" Smart UHDTV (LG) upstairs and we really like it. Its 4k res so the picture is very crisp but it was about $1400. Being that the TV needed will be in the basement I dont think I want to front that kind of cash if there are better options. I would like to be able to use the internet for Hulu/netflix etc, which is why a smart TV makes sense but I had another member suggest getting a non-smart TV and doing something like he has, a surround system with the ability to browse the net. I have an Xbox but am currently not a Live member so that is an added annual cost if I chose that route.

As stated above, looking for some options. Id like something that is good to watch the Wings or Lions as well as some Xbox and movies without going nuts on my budget.

The options are enough to drive you nuts. Pick a realistic budget, increase it by 20%, then start shopping.
I did my system downstairs about 5 years ago. 55" Insignia TV, Onkyo A/V receiver and Klipsch 5.1 surround speakers. We also have an X-Box connected to it.
We have an Amazon Firestick that we get movies on, too. Watching a movie in your own home with sound quality as good as a theater is pretty sweet.

One point I will make: Use HDMI cables as much as possible. Don't wast your money on Monster-branded stuff. You can get equal quality for less that half the price.

What's your total budget for TV and surround ? Are you looking for in wall speakers? How big is the room? Viewing distance from wall to seating area?

For cables you can get everything you need at monoprice.com

Yea, I wasnt planning on buying the crazy $100 HDMI cables. Ill look into that link.

Id say the max viewing distance is about 20-25 feet. Its a cinder block basement wall (unfinished currently) and an open ceiling (I will be adding sound absorbing foam boards to keep the noise in the basement)

Total budget is still up for debate. Id like to do it on the cheaper side but I am not opposed to putting a little extra money into it if there is a big difference in quality. I saw a 55" LG Smart HDTV LED 1080P for $599 at Sears, Best Buy and other bigger stores were $650. If I could do the setup for $1k-$1200 I'd be happy but Im open to suggestions.

We have a 100" screen and HD Epson Projector. The picture is crisp and I love it! If I could fit a larger screen, I would.

I have an Onkyo 8.1 surround sound. The speakers aren't mounted in the optimal spot up front, but still sound great. If I were to do it again, they would be mounted differently.

I have an HD cable box hooked to it to watch TV, play DVD's through X-Box, and have a KD Links box that plays just about any format file you can download and also connects to the Internet.

Also have a wet bar and some arcade games. Post photos of yours when you're done!

Is that The Wraith?

Costco has decent deals on non-4k TVs. CES is coming so prices on 2015 stuff will start dropping.

As a long time Onkyo person I'd probably switch to Denon (or Marantz) at this point. Can get an OK deal on a refurb from Accessories4Less.

I always have great front speakers im willing to part with. Right now ive got a pair of...

Is this similar to what you have? Or is yours a higher end model? I'm having a real big dilemma right now as I just about have my basement finished and have to decide on a projector and some type of screen, or a new 4K HD tv. Do they make a 4K capable projector?

Mine was about $1,100 3 or 4 years ago. The one you posted looks nice!

I I enjoy it and will likely keep it and just get a larger screen when we move.

Ok. I had a budget of $2,000 for the tv. So it looks like this might be more financially practical. Any recommendations on what type of screen? Is it worth looking into a 4K capable projector? Thanks. Sorry OP, I'm not trying to hijack your thread!

Ambilights are a really awesome effect if you decide to go with a TV instead of a projector. You can build your own out of a Raspberry Pi and some programmable RGB LEDs.

$2000 is not even close if your talking 4k projector. It's still new tech, so it's gonna be a while before prices come down.

Screen selection is dependent on your room. Is it dedicated with no lights? Or will it be a general room with some ambient light? If the latter, go with a Dalite.

And with this projector. Epson 5030ub $1999. I've got the 5020(prior model) and love it. Great for movies, gaming, sports, and you can keep low lights on without washing the screen.
