Looking for a puppy, anyone have any leads?

My wife and I are looking for a puppy for our family. I have a young daughter (3 in August), so I was thinking along the lines of a lab.

We had one lined up earlier today, but then the people went sketchy and stopped taking our calls. Dirt bags! Anyway, if somebody has a lead please post here or give me a PM.

The mall wants obscene money for their pups, and I'm not looking to spend $800 on a lab pup from the mall.

go to the shelter (humane society etc) and pick one out.

DO NOT fund pet stores in the mall.

pitbulls are some of the best dogs with kids. Labs have many hereditary problems (hip dysplasia, eating everything in site, and tons of orthopedic issues) so make sure you can take care of one before adopting one.

^Yep, Humane Society or a shelter. They often have purebred animals for less than breeders charge and you should feel good to save an animal instead of buying from people making a profit.

You should be able to get a very nice lab pup from a private breeder for $300-$400
depending on registration and vet services included. I've had a couple labs and they are fantastic family dogs.

I paid 300 bucks for haylee (she is 13 months old now) purebred AKC from a reputable breeder with papers and health guarantee

I paid 75 bucks for Harley (she is 5 months old now) purebred chocolate without papers
I found Harley on craigslist.

Labs are great, but Golden Retrievers are better! If you're going to buy a dog and want a pure bred, go to a breeder. I've had great success with just using the paper. Just really check the people out when you get there. See how they've handled the litter, and the mother dog. Ask to see there papers and the male if possible. Do your due diligence.

If you don't have to have a pure bred dog, go to the shelter. I've gotten two "mutts" (they won't 100% ID a dog as purebred) from the pound. One was truly a mutt, the other was an Australian Shepard. They were great dogs.

We've got a Golden now. 2-1/2 year old male. He is the most loving soul I think
I've ever met. He's a little jittery compared to my labs, but he's my little buddy.

Jittery? Really? I've got 4 of them, that's never been an issue. Either way, they are just great dogs.

I would go with a girl over a boy no matter what dog you go with. They're just easier to train. They're not always worried about there territory etc.

Agree with everyone....petfinder, rescue or humane society.

Do NOT buy a puppy from a pet store. They are from puppy mills :pukey:

If you get a pure breed from a reputable breeder you are going to have to pay a decent amount of money.

I ended up going out towards Muskegon to get Riley (yellow lab). Seemed to be cheaper on the other side of the state, with papers it was $250 for a male. I think the guy wanted $200 for females.

hhhmmmm...Usually females cost more than males. That guys got it backwards!

Thanks for all of the input. I grew up with dogs my entire life, so no worries there on the commitment side of it. I know what we are in for, a great addition to what we feel is a warm loving family.

I grew up with three golden's and they were amazing animals. My pup and I were inseperable until I got my license. Often times though, he'd be sleeping in my room waiting for me and then jump up on my bed.

I'm not hung up on having papers, a mut is fine by me. I just want to make sure the pup is of reasonably good stock. A lot of things can be trained out of them, but then again certain things they are born with.

Thanks again for all of the input. I will most likely adopt.

Don't get a Lab (boooooooooooooring) and definitely do not get a puppy from a puppy mill place like a mall pet store, petsmart, petco, etc.

What you need is a super sweet male American Bulldog!
