lawyer that deals with automotive repair issues

2004 F150 w/5.4 140,000 miles

He had a rough idle so he took it in to local garage. They polled code and found the cam phaser's where out of sync. So they replaced the cam phaser's, timing chains, chain guides.
He told them wile your in there replace the spark plugs. 3 weeks later they told them they would be done in a day or so. The next day the shop called him and told him he need a motor.
A rod broke and went through the side of the block and told him his bill would be 9k for all the work that had been done along with the new motor.

Any valve train damage? sounds like someone did a cam job SEVERELY wrong...

Did he sign an invoice for the additional work (new motor) if not then he is not liable for those costs which he did not authorize.

Here's what I think happened:

They did a cam/timing chain job - and COMPLETELY fucked up the timing on it... Started it, all hell broke loose inside the motor, and performed the vented block mod on itself.

Shop doesn't want to admit fuck up and pay for cost of replacement engine -- tells customer they are going to have to pay it.

You don't necessarily need a lawyer - there are government offices that do handle things like this as well :)

If you have a complaint with a repair facility or a vehicle dealer, talk to the owner or manager. When you bring a problem to the manager's attention, you may be able to work out a settlement.

If this does not resolve the problem, you may contact the Regulatory Monitoring Division, Bureau of Information Security (BIS), Michigan Department of State at 1-888-SOS-MICH (1-888-767-6424). You may also file an Automotive complaint online. Jurisdictional complaints involving motor vehicle sales or repairs are routinely investigated by BIS;

You must file a complaint using the printable Consumer's Automotive Information & Complaint Kit; (PDF Format) or the Online Automotive Complaint Form, accessible at the bottom of the page;
If you believe you were charged for repairs that were not done or were told you needed repairs that you later found out were not needed (even if you did not have the repairs done), contact BIS immediately;
If you have not received your title and registration within three weeks, contact BIS;

I never saw this thread before. I don't really see how you can fuck up a timing job bad enough to throw a rod through the block. I've seen valves lodged into the tops of pistons. Unless this engine had some SUPER strong valves I can't see it tossing a rod even if the exhaust valves were 100% open at TDC.

RBOD - I've seen some silly shit like this before. Hit the valves, break the valve off, which in turn fucks up the piston and shoots the rod out the side.
