Kona Grill.... Yea/Nay?

So is that place any good? The review pretty much all say, "Great atmosphere, with over priced mediocre food."

Experiences?

Its ok. There are better places for the same amount of money. The service was very good, but the food is your average chain high dollar restaurant fare.

My favorite is Fran O'Briens Maryland Crabhouse on Opdyke and South Blvd...way better food than Kona Grill, and about the same price as well. Frans has that New England feel on the inside...definitely not yuppie-ville like Kona Grill.

I went once with some people from work and it was ok. There were a lot of cougars hanging around the bar at happy hour but as far as the food goes it was a little overproced I thought.

as the food goes it was a little overpriced I thought.
That's pretty much the case with all of the restaurants along the Big Beaver corridor. Ocean Prime, Maggiano's, J Alexander's, etc, etc.

The only time I dine in any of these places is if one of our vendors is picking up the check.

Did I hear Cougars and happy hour in the same sentence? :icon_drin :bj: :thumbsups

I've been there a couple of times and it was just OK....It wasn't bad, but it is a little on the pricey side. I just expected more. The service was pretty good, though......

I like Hooters better....

My wife loves Kona grill....had one bad experince at fran o'brians (over cooked crab) but I like frans.... I never made it to Kona yet..

How is Ocean Prime?
It's definitely good quality food, but it's expensive as hell. I've been there probably three times and that's only because one of our vendors invited me there.

Lots of uppity business folks there drinking wine and munching on expensive appetizers. Expect to be there for a *long* time. Everything is slow - that's part of the experience.

it's the kind of place you go when you want to spend two hours on dinner. The last time I was there we were in for probably five hours. I was exhausted by the time our food arrived (I did have a scotch or two while we chatted).

I'd only go if someone else is buying as for less/equal money I could get a better meal at Lelli's or Andiamo's, at least for the type of food I like (steak).

Ocean Prime had tons of stuff that was probably really good that I wouldn't try. I'm pretty fussy - I know what I like.

What sort of food are you looking for? Are you just looking for good food or something romantic?

Kona is nice and as posted above kinda pricey. Still good food just a little overpriced, we usually go during happy hour or like after 9pm or something they have select items half off. Its not anywhere near as highend as Ocean Prime but it gets the job done.

I've eaten at Kona Grill and Ocean Prime many times.

Kona Grill has pretty good food but is a bit overpriced...common for the area.
Ocean Prime has very good food and usually very good service but they are priced pretty high, especially considering it's Troy, MI. and not in a posh LA/New York area. The caliber of cars there during lunch and often dinner usually tell you the price range of the food on their menu. :D

One thing about Kona Grill is that its always packed. Last time I went I had to park around one of the islands in the middle of the parking lot

I felt that way about Ocean Prime also. I spent 150 with tip on me and my girl. We got soup, meal and cocktails for that price.

We went to Mortons Steak House for my birthday which was wayyy over priced. We got the same type of food and same amount of food for 250 with tip. Craziness.

I'd rather grill up my own steak, on my own grill with a beer in my hand. It's just as good, no wait, it's better.
