Is 3200LBS to heavy for a glide?

Need some help with picking my next trans...My truck weighs 3180 with a SBC i it. Is that too heavy for a glide or should i stick with a TH trans

I would think it would be but I am not a trans guy..
TH 350 done up with a short tail would be better. They run glides in light 4 link cars not traction bar heavy stuff.

it would be ok on the nitrous but wouldn't be as fast on motor. At that weight and power level i would go with a th400 before a glide.

Of course a powerglide will work, I have some of my units running in 12000lb vehicles with 1500+hp.

the question you should be asking
"is a powerglide the best for my application"

There are a tremendous amount of aftermarket parts for glides to increase the strength and holding power. Some are nice quality parts, some are crap.
You just need someone to assist you with your application.
Every application and every customers needs and wants are different.
Call me during business hours and I would be glad to answer your questions-rich

Tons of people have glides in much heavier cars. Maybe it would go a tenth quicker with a th400 but if you're street racing, I wouldn't think twice about going glide. Plus they are lighter than th400's which is nice as well. Glides seem to be more converter sensitive but once you get one that works, you will probably see no difference from th400 to glide except maybe gaining some consistency on the street. I had a 400 in my blue car and wish I had a glide.

Any Power adders?

What's the main purpose for the truck? A glide will work at the weight your talking about, but as the vehicle weight increases with a glide, things like trans gear ratio, axle ratio, and converter stall speed along with STR {stall torque ratio} start to become factors that make the difference between the win light or packing it up on the trailer and going home.

My thoughts are that if you want a glide and nitrous, you have to really give up the N/A performance.

You will need a lazier rear gearing for the higher speed on nitrous AND you will need a TIGHT converter because on a large hit of nitrous it will flash 1000+ rpm more than on motor alone. This is stacked also on the fact that you have a LONG first gear. At the most important part of the track(the front),it's like 3 strikes against running quick on motor alone. You might as well be towing a camper. highspeed gearing, engine bogging converter, equivalent to leaving in second gear.... An All or nothing type of deal. I am doing this right now and my converter was on the step when I got home. Had to tighten it up because it was flashing to 6000 instead of 5000 on the hose which made it slow because of converter slip. tight converter=tamer on the street also:D finally.

I'd stay with a 400 if it's less than 6-700hp. If you're shooting for more, a pg will be fun and consistant.
