any suggestions?

what does everyone have, what do you like/dislike?

computer will be used for business, music, videos, and hp tuners.

i want something fast. i can not stand when my current laptop takes forever to close a window or program. it takes forever to boot up etc.
battery life is a small priority as well.

jesus christ chad i didnt have to read your post to know what you wrote.

hp tuners.

Lmao. I have a MacBook Pro, and am not suggesting you do or don't get one. What I will say, is they do have programs at reasonable cost for Macs to run Windows software.

Get a Mac run boot camp for hptuners I love my MacBook Air and MacBook Pro retina they are well built machines. The only pc I would buy would be ummm I dunno all built like crap I think the HP elites are sexy though.

can you get the hook up on mac stuff? price was kind of a hold back too, as this wont be a "sit at home next to the recliner" computer, im sure itll get banged up in race cars, in my truck, etc

I might be able to get you an MSU C-Store discount on one since I'm alumni now, I'll look into it. Or maybe Payso also has a hook up??? I paid $1099 for my 13" MacBook Pro. I've had it 3 years to the day now, the only thing I've ever had to do with it is restart it 3 times in that period. No other issues of any kind within that period, knock on wood. If you are worried about it getting banged up they do have nice covers/cases for them, and you could get a solid state drive in it.

I use a 4 year old Dell with a 64GB SSD and 4GB of RAM, works plenty good. I do run Debian and not Windows though...might feel older than it really is if I gave Windows a whirl

I have a new Lenovo taptop with Windows 8, all the bells and whistles, bought it for 850 with a touchscreen, runs better than any computer I have ever touched.

some good info! unfortunately most of it is greek to me! lol

I have a used laptop for sale...Dell XPS - 17" screen - Win 7 - i7 core processor - 8g ram - NVidia GT550 video card...Very fast - 1-1/2 years old...

Licensed Office 2010, AutoCAD and Inventor

I'll take $550 for it...Cost about $1200 new

The Dell XPS is a business computer. The 3rd gen i7 processor was the fastest one out at the time, now they have a 4th generation i7. My laptop has 2 video cards. One that runs the main laptop screen and the NVidia card runs a separate monitor, so you can have dual screens. The computer has 8 gig ram, but can be expanded to 16g.

Autocad and Inventor are 2D and 3D drawing programs, which cost about $5k. Office is somewhere around $200.

I use the computer for 3D drawing, so it is good for 3D gaming....

gary, AWESOME info.

the one thing i am worried about, is.. i dont quite know how to keep a computer in "good" or "new" shape software wise. it seems every computer i have owned (about 5) has gotten slow, and hard to use after a year or two. its kind of the reason i want to buy a brand new one. after the purchase i was going to post asking how to keep them in good useable shape.

This being said you probably don't need a new computer.
You can backup your data, format and re-install the operating system (any of your friends good with computers can do this for a case of beer)

Tricks to keeping PCs running good

#1 ... No kids on PC
#2 ... Never click on banners or pop ups
#3 ... No questionable websites
#4 ... Don't install anything you don't absolutely need
