How to react to a misleading FOR SALE ad.

My buddy is in the market for a 03/04 Cobra, Low miles, close to or stock, and WHITE only. He found a couple out of state and contacted all of them. Found one in Minnesota, contact the seller and its a 26 yr old women selling it. Says its her husbands car who has died and her father is doing the leg work for the sale. Father gets in contact with my friend says its completely MINT. Not a single dent, ding, scratch or mark on it. Sends about 15 pics of the car and they look as the car is described, white cobra completely stock and low miles. My friend said he wanted the car and asked again "Be 100% honest before I buy the plane tickets is there anything to know about this car that I should know about? Its as clean as you describe it?" He says yes. Well we hop on a plane and fly out there with the idea of buying it and driving it home. We get picked up by these people from the airport and they just keep ranting how amazing this car is and the most babied Cobra thats around. We get there and before I even walk past the rear bumper I notice its like 10 shades darker then the quarter panels. I then look at the body lines of the deck lid and the qtr and notice the glue or bonding agent is visable with the truck closed. So I pop the truck and its very clear BOTH qtrs have been replace or taken off the car at some point and put back on by a middle schooler. Walk around the car and open the door, I notice over spray all over the roof and start to see tape lines on the pilars of the car, and door jams. I get in the car and bump the side skirt and watch it move a 1/2 inch, grab it and see its missing clips and it loose as can be. AWESOME. Pop the hood and all the fender bolts have been painted over along with the hood hinges. Counted over ten chips or small scratched I couldnt see in the pics they sent us. The pics also had NO wheel weights on the face of the wheel and when we got there all four wheels had weights stuck on the face of the wheel. I asked these people if this car is the same one in the Add of if they have the car we came to look at? They were completely confused and wondered why we didnt like the car. WHITE CAULK was on the inner fenders and painted over for some reason. Stain on the seats. After taking it for a drive 2nd gear whinned more then it should have also.

We shot them a very low price in which the lady said no and had her BF take us back to the airport. So basically we flew to MN to see a piece of shit car that looked nothing like the pics and to see the mall of America. Worst trip to see a car in my short lifetime so far.

15 pics and the "word" of some random people isnt enough to buy 2 plane tickets a few states away. it would be 100 pics close up of just about everything before i fly out to see a car.

This isnt the first time we've traveled outta state for a car. If it was some modded fox body sure TONS of pics but a BONE STOCK low mile 2nd owner cobra should be pretty straight foward

It was the car, but it was VERY misleading. Deff a bad day, Offered them 6 k less then the asking price

I'm not sure what I would do in those circumstances!
Offering them ANYTHING was pretty gracious on your part! It's a chance we take anytime we buy long distance.

I have a friend of mine who buys 4 or 5 cars per year out west. Hasn't been burned yet.... Don't know how he does it!!

You could have avoided all this mess & disappointment…….and cost!

BEFORE you buy a plane ticket...

Next time contact a local Ford Dealership and you pay for an inspection.
The Ford Dealership will be working for you, you pay for it & the dealership
sends you the report.

The out of state cars owners simply have to take their for sale car to a local
dealership for an inspection. 98% of sellers will have no problem doing this.
The 2% who do have a problem doing this – you don’t want their car anyways.

Now where is my "+1 Rep" ?

Husband and wife, Husband died, wife got new bf. This lady told us this was more then a transaction and she wanted to hug us before the car was sold lmao. I the way to her house from the airport she made us listen to a THEME song they had when she learned to drive the car. She wasnt hot she was a 26 yr old basket case who said she didnt leave her house for 2 yrs after her husband died other then to take the car for a drive or something stupid like that. She was the outdoorsy looking lady, If I had to guess she has a crotch full of hair lol.

What an unfortunate waste of time and money. Considering the description of the car you provided, I am surprised you would offer anything for that Cobra. Next time, try posting on one of the national forums to see if anyone nearby the car can take a look for you. I have done this for other people as a favor, and at least it offers an unbiased opinion from another enthusiast. If it checks out, then I would schedule it for a pre-purchase inspection as mentioned previously.

Looking on the bright side, at least you didn't buy it and figure all this out when you brought the car home!

That sucks dude, I would be pretty livid as well, as I'm sure that they knew it was in that condition but probably figured if you flew all the way out there you'd buy it anyway.

I am shocked he can't find what he's looking for here in MI. It seems that those cars are everywhere but then again I live in Dearborn where 99% of the cars are Fords.

Why not try a stealership? I know it sucks dealing with them but theres probably a couple of what you're looking for here in Dearborn.

Stupid question, did your buddy run a CARFAX? I know CARFAX doesn't tell you everything especially if damage was fixed by the owner but I'm curious.
