How to handle customer?

I work at a Computer/networking store doing anything from repairs, camera installs, sales, etc.

Of course I deal with idiots everyday but this one may take cake for month

When a computer is dropped of we require them to sign a paper authorizing repairs/upgrades which the customer did when the computer was brought in 2 weeks ago.

He called and asked the total the day after it came in and stated he would have the $$ at the beginning of the month. Yesterday he came in and asked for the total again and said he would be back in today to pick the computer up. (keep in mind this is an XP computer that came in with 128mb RAM)

We removed viruses/malware/etc. and put in a 1gb DDR stick in the computer.

Today he (about 50yo 5'3" 125lbs) comes in and starts screaming at us as to why we would upgrade his computer without his authorization to which I grabbed his slip and showed where he signed for virus cleanup and memory upgrade. but I could remove the memory if didn't want to pay for it....

He then said to return the computer to the way it was when he brought it and he would take it to another store that would charge less.

I stated I would be glad put viruses back on his computer but that would add another hour of service to his bill lol so his cost would then go up....

Now he left and said he is filing charges against me for stealing his computer and blackmailing him for his information!! hahahahhha

I guess my question is at what point is it easier to become a giant ASS and tell a customer to F-off as opposed to being nice during the conversation?

If somebody gets in your face and calls you a cocksucker, I want you to be nice. Ask him to walk. Be nice. If he won't walk, walk him. But be nice. If you can't walk him, one of the others will help you, and you'll both be nice. I want you to remember that it's a job. It's nothing personal.

Words to live by

Don't be an ass. Obviously he's not right in the head in some form or another. You know what's right and you'll never get in trouble for that. If he wants his money back for the memory then take it out and refund him. He's stuck with the virus removals and the cost associated with it. You don't really have to give him back the money for the memory either, but I probably would just to make it look like you went the extra mile for him.

YOU have all the backu[
I would say just keep being nice, it will make him look even more stupid....

Thats what I would do, "kill em with kindness" it will make them that much MORE pissy hahaha

Im in the same line of work...

If they dont want to pay they dont get their computer, end of story. Tell him to file charges otherwise.

Of course remove the RAM though...

trunk hit the nail on the head. how else could a guy that abrasive continue to prosper in such a customer service driven industry??.....:efg:

Roadhouse FTW. RIP Patrick Swazy.

be nice, no point in making a bad situation worse by going toe to toe...

Believe me, he didn't get the computer... If I can find a pic of the guy I will post it on here lol

I was actually very nice during the conversation and I am sure it pissed him off even more... But part of me still wanted to tell him to get the fuck out of the store...

Part 2 of today was dealing with an teenage girl (18-19ish)
Her laptop was cleaned about a month ago (limewire, frostwire, 7-8 toolbars, 8,000,000 things in startup, etc)

She came in and said after a lightning storm last week her computer won't power up and she thinks it is because we didn't clean it good enough..
I plugged in a different power adapter and the computer started up as normal with limewire back on the computer!

She then thought she was going to take the adapter with her because we "owed" it to her...

Today at Mid5 I had a SHOP send me a cyl head off a 2.2l GM that the exhaust seat fell out and burned a hole the size of 2 quarters in the combustion chamber.... They wanted to know if it was cracked and if not to go ahead and surface it if it wasnt cracked.

I called and asked if anyone in the shop had ever worked on a car before today.

ohhh yeah. classic.

I do tech support for a software company and deal with the same shit. We have customers who lose the serial number for their very expensive software and think we're scamming them when we charge them a very small amount to give it back to them after we verify their identity. They're lucky that we even do that for them.

The list goes on, there are so many stupid people out there it's astounding.

I would hope your shop is more professional and confidential than that. Calling your customers idiots is one thing, but taking pictures from their personal computer (I assume you'd be finding this picture on his computer) and posting them on the internet, is not a good way to keep your business open.
