Home Protection? help/opinions wanted..

So... now that I have my own home and things/animals/people I'd like to protect in it, I am searching for a good gun. I know there are a lot of people on here that are very knowledgable when it comes to this subject so I was looking for opinions. Right now a friend is storing his guns at my home, so I have an AK and an M4, but those will be leaving soon.

I am leaning towards a 12 gauge because it's easy, hardly ever jams if ever, and if I wake up at 4am and have to shoot it, no accuracy is really needed.

I found one or 2 that i like at Cabela's. I'm leaning towards this Remington Tactical 12 gauge. It's around $300 and it's a pretty nice gun. I know there are cheaper ones... but I dont want super cheap and crappy.

Any help/guidance would be appreciated.

Thanks

Patrick

It's not like Doom where you can take 2 guys out at the same time with a shotgun. The pellets don't spread much in a house.

Get yourself a 12 gauge and load it up with 00 buck. Shoot it a lot so you're comfortable with it.

You might want to get a handgun to keep on you as well for backup.

Yes.. I know this. But, a shotgun is more point and shoot and you will hit, rather than a handgun where it's a little more precise.

get a plain mossberg pump 12ga and youll be fine. Thats what I got my parents when my dad was talking about a handgun for home protection. they have no plans to carry, it is just something to keep behind their bed in case of an intrusion. Its hard to miss with 6 shells of 00 Buck in an unchoked 18" Barrel

To be honest the best home protection is one that , stops the thief or alerts you before the break in. I still say a dog (a real dog, no 3lb purse dogs) is the best preventive method.

Remember, inside a home, a 10 to 12 yard shot would be considered quite a distance. Even using bird shot will only yeild about a 6"-8" pattern. Training and practice is essential when it comes to defending your life. Muscle memory and instinct will take over.

That being said, a 9mm handgun with a good self defense load, and light or a decent tactical 12 ga shotgun with a light would work fine after a good amount of practice.

A real dog, and ADT are all you need. Unless you like on like Chene st or someshit down in the hood, and there are houses burning and drivebys and shit, then i'd have a few loaded semi auto hand guns.

Maybe an Uzi. But you PROBABLY live in a modest middle class area, and PROBABLY wont have a problem.

I live about a quarter mile north of 8 mile in Ferndale. I've seen some shady people wandering when I come home late from a bar.

As far as the dog sitation goes... I already have a pit bull, but if an intruder has a gun, I'm not taking the chance on sending him downstairs after a guy with a gun, he'll be shot. I'd rather take my chances at the top of my stairs with a shotty, once I wrap it, it's loud enough most people recognize that sound.

I have shot several guns in my lifetime, many friends have lots of em, but most just buy and buy and buy just to have an arsenal. I've never really payed attention enough to say that I am educated at all on the different types of guns. I want one gun for home protection. The general consensus I get is buy a 12 gauge with 00 buckshot and start practicing. I think that's the way I'm headed, just wanted some of your guys' opinions because I know a lot of you are gun enthusiasts.
