Being in the mortgage business for close to 16 years now, I’ve met a ton of home inspectors. I can pass you along info to a 1 or 2 if you would like.

Advice I would give to someone auditioning house inspectors: I never felt more ripped off than the time I paid a guy $500 and his report was a CD with him recording himself walking through the house and checking things, and taking pictures of them. I would prefer a written report that included a sketch of every room with comments. I think they actually have a paper template for all the stuff to check. Just me though.

Most home inspectors are a joke. A bad joke. I've argued with several before and schooled some pretty bad. I usually tag along with friends that are buying houses and are getting it inspected. It's like watching Comedy Central, plus I usually get free lunch or dinner out of it. One in 10 or so seem to be well-seasoned former tradespeople and they seem to do a great job.

On a car forum, with people that work on cars, I suspect they are more than capable of inspecting a house. As far as I'm concerned the main reason to get an inspector is for negotiating with the seller.

NACHI and ASHI are the two main inspector certification bodies and I'm pretty sure if you show up semi-sober with a pulse you can pass their exams.
