They busted the cell phone at a gas station myth. They did in fact speak with the fire department and they had a video clip where a fireman stepped out of a car, released the static electricity from his hand to the pump, and it ignited.
I don't see cell phones starting fires. Static electricity, yes. That's why it's a good idea to grab onto something metal/grounded after you get out of your car, but before you grab the pump.
I think they showed that when the person gets back into their car that's when the static is generated. I don't know if I remember this correctly but I think they also mentioned women are much more likely to get back into the car after putting the nozzle inside the tank.
I get back in my truck...you just have to ground yourself before touching the pump...notice her messing with the clothes and such building up a static charge
