HELP! 2004 Honda Civic - No Heat!

What do you guys think is going on? Here's what happens.

When I leave my house for my morning commute I turn the heat on and it blows cold. This is natural obviously because the car has not warmed up. As the car warms up I start to get heat for a mile or two until the car gets to operating temperature. Here is the problem. All of the sudden the car will start blowing luke warm air and barely any heat is produced. The engine temperature looks to be even a little below normal operating temperature. Now if I shut the heat off for about 5 minutes and turn it on again VIOLA I have heat for the next mile or two and then the process repeats itself.

What's going on?

sounds like the heater core is not flowing enough.
does that have a mechnical valve in the heater hose? if not the core is probably plugged

Good one!

(this is my DD)

Hopefully the next reply is at the hands of someone WITH brains..

Lighten up?

All of the following mentioned would be a good place to start, something clogged would be sketchy since it's a newer car but possible I guess. Maybe google some civic forums and search maintence sections.

t-stat that stays open once it opens the first time? It seems like whenever I have problems like that it is the thermostat.

My 01 had the AC quit all of the sudden and it was a cabin air temp sensor. I was surprised it even had one. Ask the dealer.

I agree that it's most likely a plugged heater core, could be a t/stat as well but it should have consistantly poor heat in that case. As far as the temp sensor goes I've never heard of that, but really, I've never had a heater issue with a Honda. When the car warms up, go and feel both heater hoses going into the firewall, if one is hot and the other isn't-plugged heater core.
