So i was able to get this Harley off my uncle, i am trying to see what its worth or if anyone here is interested in the bike. Its a 1968 XLCH Sportster, all original with 29k. Has a different tank on it right now, but i have the stock tank and all the parts in great condition. I dont know much about these older bikes, it has been sitting for a few years, so it needs the fluids changed and so be gone over before starting again. I was hoping that there are some old school Harley guys in there that can give this young guy some insight or info about this bike...How hard is it to set points, or should i be able to fire this thing up after putting new plugs and gas in it?.. Thanks again Motown !!

Clean looking bike but sportsters don't hold their value as well as some of the full dressed bikes and some of the bigger bikes. I would put the value lower due in part to the miles and to the mechanical issues.

Setting points on a car is fairly easy. Im not sure on a bike. If it were mine, I would clean it up, get everything running in tip-top shape and then list it for the middle of the road value. It seems like a nice bike and you should be able to get top dollar to the right buyer

I had several Harleys and while everyone speaks of how great the older ones are, but most weekend riders want an Evo engine because they are much more reliable and don't leak oil because they did away with the split case. The earlier engines only had a kick start and due to the magneto and carbs, were hard to start on occasion. It takes some snot to kick one over, especially if you aren't in the right location on the crankshaft. The carbs always required some fiddling with to keep in tune and the mags get weak after some time and require either recharging or replacing.

And, what Bateater said, Sporty's just don't hold much value, even when they have the larger engine in them.

These are just come thoughts off the top of my head as I remember running down the road, pushing my H-D, hopping on and popping the clutch trying to get it going -whew-<whew><whew>

cool bike keep and drive it!

I am gonna get it started this weekend and take it for a ride, but i am pretty sure i am going to sell it, thats the plan. So if anyone is interested in this bike i can post more pictures and give more info. Its a one owner bike with all original parts and paperwork.

So i come to find out this bike hasn't been started since 1985, i cleaned the gas tank out, new plugs and oil. I didnt touch the carbs or the points. A few sprays of starting fluid and she started right up, ran great. I rode it around the block. I thought that it was pretty awesome that this thing started so easy after sitting for 30 years.
