Gun folks: looking to buy Mossberg 500 tactical

So, I'm on a mission to buy a Mossberg 500 Tactical, specifically model 50420.

I was up at Dunham's this weekend and they have $50 off their guns 399.99 and up. With that said, the price of the Mossy was 419.99. After perusing online, a couple retailers have it a bit cheaper, but I'd rather purchase this from a gun shop or box store like Dunham's. So, is $420 a decent price? Is there a different local retailer I should check out before pulling the trigger on this?

For some background, I'm buying this primarily for home protection. This model has a collapsible stock, pistol grip, bead sights, and a 18.5" smooth barrel. I think it would fit my and my wife's needs well. Thanks for any suggestions/insight!

You can buy an ATI stock like that for $35 at Dunhams and then for another $8 you can get the shell holder. But the truth is it's stupid and you're better off with the regular stock. You can put that stock on any old Mossberg 500 (you can pick up a used one for $150-$200), saw the barrel down and save yourself about $200.

Also, unless your wife can bust some clays with a pump-action I'd forget about it for a HD gun. Too easy to jam by short-stroking it and lots of recoil. Buying a 20 gauge will help with the recoil but only practice is going to help with working the pump action.

I had that exact same gun and it was awsome ammo is cheap and its fun to shoot but get her some target shot.. anything else is gonna kick to hard depending on her size

Thanks for the replies, guys.

A few reasons I want this gun/set-up:
1) as useless as the collapsible stock may be, I strongly feel it'll still be better than a straight pistol grip
2) I HIGHLY doubt it'll be used for the intended purpose, but I'd rather have it and not need it, than need it and not have it
3) With the short barrel, the gun will be easily maneuverable throughout the house
4) The gun is ready as is....I won't have to order any parts, wait for them to come in, worry about modifying it, etc. Just pick up and pull the trigger.

Maybe I'm WAY off base, but it's going to be more of an ease of mind for me than anything. I will probably use to plink around at the range occasionally, but I really want something in the house to defend myself in the event something goes down.

Here's a pic for reference:

I paid $175 for my Mossberg 500, put about a hundred bucks into it, and I'm good to roll with an eotech and everything. The tacticals and shit are over priced.

Joe, Mossberg 500 on Migunowners are like $150 to 200, cut the barrel down, file it. Buy a collapsible stock and you're good to roll. Just trying to save you some money man.

I bought a 20.5" Remington 870 with the extended tube and a Mossberg 500 with a slugster barrel for $299 out the door at a local pawnshop. Both black with synthetic furniture, so they're extra scary.

Want to sell the Mossy?? I have been contemplating hitting up a couple local pawn shops just to see. But, a brand new gun, with everything I want already done has its appeal. I'm also incredibly impatient. You guys have successfully talked me out of making an immediate purchase at a box store. I'll poke around a bit and see what I can come up with. I've been scouring MGO the past couple of weeks, but didn't catch anything that looked like a great deal.

Post in the wanted to buy. Mossberg 500 or 870 for under $225, bet you'll get a million PM's.

Cool, maybe I'll do that tonight. I had some reservations about buying used.....but I hear nothing but great things about both guns. As long as it isn't rusted or pitted, I should be pretty straight, right?

I have a very nice, like-new Mossberg 500 for sale (not the pawn shop one), it's got wood furniture. $225 and it's yours, for $275 I'll give you a pistol grip with M4-style collapsible stock like in the picture.

Bad thing is I'm up in Saginaw, but my brother lives in Warren and I'm coming down to visit him either this weekend or next. You can come up here and get it if you want it earlier, it's only an hour and a half drive.
