You-Design-It Drag Project
How's it going, folks?
Let me give you the lowdown real quick:
I'm entering the Grassroots challenge, I have a little less than a year until the competition.
You have to build a car that can drag, autocross and look good in a concourse for under $2007. Anything you get for free has to be listed in your budget at "Fair Market Value". If your FMV is not fair, they'll DQ you. You can ask before the event, no guessing there.
You can recoupe up to $1003 by selling things off of your car, so you basically have $301o; that is if your car or "parts deal" has something valuable you can hock.
I'm not aiming too high for my first competition, but we're looking to crush one event and do it originally.
Concourse takes meticulous bodywork and a general self-hatred attitude. Autocross takes tons of suspension tuning and autocross experience that we just don't have yet.
So that leaves being dirty fast on the dragstrip. The time that won the dragstrip event last time was a 10.53 ET. Second place was like 10.89. The others were >11.5; Most being >16
Any production passenger car is allowed. The only exception to that is Zambonis; they're allowed and it's never been done.
-------------
So basically, wouldn't you come over to talk to MotownMuscle about a drag car? I think it's a good choice :badass: What would you guys do?
We have a pretty solid plan in the works, but it has a few issues.
We're looking at a notchback foxbody with a 32V DOHC motor out of the Mark8. Combine that with a T-56 from a Cobra and two turbos from two Turbocoupes and you have something pretty quick. All of the parts can be obtained pretty cheaply. Not going to lie, budget would be tough on this one. We'd like a little more margin on the cash side of things. We haven't bought a single part yet, so this plan is totally conceptual. We're more than willing to change.
The combo doesn't NEED to be reliable, but it's preferred. Firecracker cars are looked down upon by the community. We'd also like to do a ton of testing prior to the event.
So again, what do you guys see when you think of this? There has to be some solid suggestions. I'm a Chevy man myself, but I'll do something off the wall if need be. The concourse isn't just about pretty cars, that's where you get the individuality points too!
This'll be built at SpeedDetroit, my shop. I'm looking for allies from all reaches of Michigan, your participation is greatly appreciated! If you lend a hand, I think I'm setting up a "sign the deck" type of deal.
Let's have it. Thanks in advance!
