Got a letter from the ODT

Got a letter from the ohio department of taxation regarding a car I sold last month. Basically, its asking me to tell them how much I sold the car for. I have a receipt for the amount, signed by the buyer. Do you guys think I should contact the guy who I sold the car to and ask him what he put down or should I just protect my own interests and put down the amount which it was sold for?

id ask him if you still have his info. or just not respond. Fuck the state, they made money on the taxes the first time it was sold. they dont need to make them again and again every time it changes hands

Im pretty sure I can get his contact info from my calling records or I probably still have his number in an email. My dad said don't even respond too. I'm just thinking that even if I call him and get the amount he said he paid, it can come back to bite me in the ass since we both have copies of the receipt stating how much he paid me.

And I'm pretty sure theres no postage included to send it back.

What state do you live in? Is blowing off the request from the state a big deal or not? I dunno.

Unless this is a close personal friend I'd probably just photocopy the bill of sale and send it to the state per their request.

If the buyer gets caught cheating on his taxes that's his problem, not yours.

I never understood that either, they are taxing money that was already taxed at one point... How is that fair?

No, they are asking me how much I sold the car for to see if he was lying about it to save on taxes. I live in Michigan btw

I'm not sure if its a serious offense. I have no relationship with this guy. The letter doesn't even ask for the bill of sale; its some form asking how much I sold the car for, what payment method, if the guy gave me any type of trade etc. It says please respond by sept 30 so I'm sure they'll send another letter if I ignore this one.

Call the guy and ask what he paid. Fuck the State of Ohio.

I would but I'm just concerned that even if he told me what he put down (I'm basically lying for him), it can come back on me if he later admitted he lied about it. I think I'm going to ignore it this time and fill it out next time for the true amount if they send another letter.

id just ignore it all together. why should you have to buy a stamp even?

Who is to say you didn't forget what you sold it for? I rarely remember what I sold a car for.....you forgot too right? :)

Don't reply. If this is something new they are trying to start let's all do our best to nip it in the bud and not reply. If nobody replies to these things they will drop them. States don't have the money to waste chasing people down for this. It will cost more in the end.
