Going to silver lake sand dunes for the first time.

I heard it wasn't as simple as just showing up, purchasing a pass, and getting in.

I would like to go this Sunday, but wanted to check with people first before I make the trip. I have a 4x4 to take out there, and have always wanted to go.

So can I just roll up Sunday when they open or do I need to do anything in preparation?

You should be fine on sunday. Are you driving your rig in or towing it? If you drive it in you usually don't have to wait. If parking lot full you'll need voucher the voucher booth is about 1/4 mile down the street, ask at the first booth. Get orv stickers, Air down tires 10-15psi and be careful. I saw a guy kill his wife on the first hill going to fast. Get used to your truck and the hills before you push the limit, you will most likley have to back down several times before you get the right speed to crest the hill. Silver lake is awesome, I go 4-5 times a year. Did I mention BE CAREFUL

This sunday they will be racing up the face of Mt Baldy in the dunes so parking might get tight but if you are just driving up and driving in, you'll be fine.. . 2 weeks ago we rolled our rigs right in... a girl will ask if you have "all of your stickers". You need bkth ORV stickers, a State park pass, and some other clear square sticker maybe for the dunes themselves??? Its 4 stickers... We always do but she may direct you to buy them down the road or at the voucher station. Getting off US31 has options. if you get off at Shelby rd, you can scoot over to the lakeshore drive which is worth seeing or you can exit on Polk rd, go north on 56th, west on Deer rd will allow you to see West Michigan Sand Dragway on your way to the dunes. They race on saturdays usually.

You need a flag mounted on your front bumper. Shoot for 15psi in the tires or you'll probably get stuck on the entrance trail. :) We like to follow the fenceline CLOCKWISE ler the rules. Following the fenceline....The second hill has a nasty dropoff that will destroy any vehicle and the run up the third hill is STEEP. I dont see any street truck making it up that. goodluck!! I usually have to hit the big hill as 60mph to crest the top around 10mph... :)

Remember the dunes constantly shift. What may be a smooth crest today may be a drop off tomorrow.

You should be able to get all tags at the booth. Everyone sells flags up there, so don't worry about having a hard time tracking one down.

If you are driving your vehicle right onto the dunes and dont have a trailer, then yes, stop at david allen racing dune land at the entrance and get your stickers, flag/flag mount, air down to 10-15 PSI.. dont get stuck and dont go too fast. The drop offs can come quick. I almost ate shit on my quad a few weeks ago.. The terrain dropped off a good 4-5 feet. Its hard to tell slight elevation changes at times.

David Allen Racing still open? It was for sale last time I was up there.

I actually love this post because I want to take my family to the Dunes this summer for a weekend get away! I plan on trailering my RZR up and was hoping there were like cabins of some sort? Any recommendations?

I cant reccomend cabins at silver lake because ive never actually seen them...a short drive away is the Double J Ranch which can be described as redneck/country disneyland.. We stayed in a cabin there a couple years ago and we dug it. This place has horses, indoor waterpark, outdoorsey games, a general store, a BBQ restaurant, a campground, a hotel, and like we stayed in..really decent cabins.

I bet you can find a nice rental around silver lake but i cant point to where exactly. The Mac Wood dune rides is a Must Do.. it takes you into an area that is not alowed by ORV's.. I think its worth seeing but then again...you might be enjkying your RZR too much to do that...haha

Hop on vacation rental by owner. You may be able to find something last minute, but they get booked pretty quickly. Cant hurt to check out the Pentwater area as well, its about 12 miles from the dunes.

HAHA Thank you man checking it out now!

I have a friend that has Cabins for rent, on the main street, 2 minute walk to silver lake beach.

How do I contact him?!?! I want to lock something in! Is there a better time to go vs others? Are they cool with me driving my RZR to the store, etc? Or the cops a-holes?

holiday weekends can be a little crazy. getting into the dunes can be a hassle and the amount of people riding around can get dangerous or just not fun. It can be compared to...imagine if everyone at milan dragway was riding the pits full throttle on their golf carts, mini bikes, etc....throw in a few monster trucks, etc... the people watching can be fun but a few people a year die.. :(
