GMC Canyon battery light

A few months ago I purchased a 2004 GMC Canyon. The truck has a little over 72,000 miles on it. About a month ago the battery light would come on for a minute so after I would start my truck in the morning. I replaced the battery at that time because it was a the factory original, and was probably due for replacement. But now the battery light is still coming on momentarily in the morning. It would be nice to actually have a voltage gauge. Any ideas on where I should start looking on why the battery light only comes on in the morning? Why did GM not put real gauges in these trucks. My previous truck I had was a 1995 Chevrolet S10 SS, that I owned for nine years. It had some decent gauges (tach, speedometer, fuel, oil pressure, battery voltage, and a temperature gauge that was actually marked).

probably an alt.

run jumper wires inside and turn a DVOM on before you start it, see what he voltage is at when the light is on
